Dont know how to turn the steering wheel

  Mondeo STTDCI

Ashamedly, I pretty much dont have a frigging clue.

I started off doing it how I was taught and feeding it through. b****cks to that!

Then I started crossing arms like a nutter in a old car.

Then I got my first 1.2 Clio the power steering was SO light I pretty much drove with one hand ALL the time. Turning the corners I would still use one hand, just applying extra pressure and the palm of my wrist. Like lorry drivers I guess. Started to wreck my steering wheel doing that. Could see the rubber starting to crack up in the one place I always put the pressure on!

Now Ive got the 182...and its a big amalgamation of the above. Basically its a mess. Ive started trying to rectify with basics like ALWAYS having hands 10 and 2. But Im very aware that its a mess.

Any tips or websites to look at?

Best to keep to the 10-2 method.

Crossing hands can be dangerous ..in the event of a crash if the aribag goes off you can punch yourself in the face at 100mph...

Not good to put the thumbs through the wheel as many have had their thumbs broken when crashing like this

ALL info supplied by police high speed trainer on a driving course that i took a while back

Where can I do a course like that?

Did wonder about thumbs...

But how to turn corners? Cross hands or feed? Feed seems to slow? Or lock on 10-2 and turn whole body/shoulders with the wheel...

I did my police driving course not long back, improved my driving loads!

obviously not available to everyone mind but get yourself on an advanced course as the methods are the same.

(he is right about the thumbs! :)

Depends on your speed really...i like to feed the wheel and quite often forget about the rules like thumbs..soon revert back when i slow down though!!

Took my course at a local place , TRL in wokingham.

Done two courses all paid for by the company..thats the way!

The courses really teach the obvious like looking far ahead and watching for obstacles...trying to teach you to watch for anything dangerous..so you can drive faster..ahem sorry carefully

Good fun on the skid pans and doing breaking stuff..plus my last driver was an ex copper and was doing J turns and stuff..cool

I always just try to keep hands at 9+3. During the course of normal driving, I find its rare that I need to move them at all...on my route each day 1/4 turn of lock each way seems enough for all the roundabouts/junctions.

Parking or going slow I feed the wheel. Would never cross hands/arms...airbag issues as above make it a bit risky, and also I dont like the complete lack of any kind of control or ability to react should you need to wind off some lock if it trys to swap ends; its a worry especially if youre "making progress".

Same as,

This is what i do:

Moving about ie parking: Both hands 10 and 2, tend to cross them for a fuller turn of the wheel in a tight spot and Moving about ie parking fast / showing off: one hand and do the "wax on wax off" move and let it spin back

Driving around town slowly: A combination of two hands 10 and 2 or 1 and 7 depending on traffic and road layout. 10 and 20 for turns etc an 1 and 7 for crusing about not very fat with gentle bends

Booting it: hold on like f**k with both hands!!! you need too!:devilish:

Crusing about, leasure driving or showing off: Right hand at 12 left hand down low for a gear change ready or resting on the elbow of my right arm

Motorway: tend to have a combination of 10 and 2, 12 ontop or just my right at 3 resting on the window sill

Doing my impression of the Starship Enterprise: im tapdancing on the pedals and moving my arms like some demented drug feind in a club dancing to some very fast rave! oh and holding on for grim death once 5.5K aproches....

"Sheilds up, arm Lasers!"

"But captin this is a Clio! were not equiped with Sheilds or Lasers"

"Well buckle up!"

"Scotty give me warp factor 6"

(as you wave good buy to the tw*t in the TT)

:D

Just put your right hand at 12o clock and your left hand on the gear stick.

just use the butt of your hand to turn the wheel, like you would with one of them old git knobs on the wheel.!

Kidding of course!:p
