Downloaded programes

Ive just acquired a series of legit TV programs and ive tried playing it on the laptop. It wont open with windows player and want me to run a different player. So i gather i need to download a player.

Any ideas what type of programme i need.........

A good start would be to say what the files are - what do they end in? .mov, .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .ogg, etc..

VLC media player. plays just about everything.

Its a MKV file if that makes sense................
