Driveshaft change

Hi all
my 172 developed a shudder on the steering wheel and then lost all drive
the car goes into gear but as you let out the clutch there is a horrid scraping noise
and the car goes nowhere.
ive been told by the recovery company it's a drive shaft gone
but just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar issue and if it was the driveshaft before I buy a new one and how easy is it to replace myself

probably the circlip, do a search youll find lots of info.

It could also be the sleeve on the driveshaft.
