Driveshaft keeps popping out of the outer CV joint!!

  Transit & Death trap
Hi,
Can anyone shed any light as to why my Driveshaft keeps popping out from the CV joint? I basically split the N/S OUTER CV boot and have replaced the boot with one from GSF(very rigid plastic, unlike the rubbery original one!).
But having now fitted this, my driveshaft keeps coming out of the CV joint:(, the obvious answer would be that the shaft hasn't been fitted far enough into the CV joint for the circlip to engage, hence the reason it keeps popping out, but how will I know when its fitted properly?
Any help/info would be great, as I'm seriously fed of getting 10mins down the road and having to tow the bloody thing home:eek:
Thanks

You had the shaft apart since? Does the spring clip actually hold the joint on anymore? (seems it doesn't)

Yes, I've had the shaft out twice now!! the circlip wasn't in the best cond' an slightly wonky, so I straightened it out and popped it back on. Each time I've had the shaft/CV apart, the clip's been on the shaft in the groove as it should be, but from your comment I gather it would possibly be worth while replacing this circlip?
Think its also worth mentioning, the CV boot I've fitted seems very compressed/restrictive and almost seems as though, when steering is on full lock the CV boot would(possibly)create a fair amount of pressure against the back of the hub!
Maybe enough to aid the shaft popping out??
All this is guess work on my part, so your comments/advice are welcomed, thanks bmh.01

You should have just fitted a stretchy rubber boot and slided it on with a fitting cone.

Sooooooooo much easier than taking the joint to bits and fitting a rigid boot

It was one of those crappy stretchy rubber ones that split, after just TWO laps at Castle combe!!
One mans idea of easier is anothers inferior, but thanks anyway:rasp:

Mines been fine for 3 years and thats after over a hundred runs down york drag strip

You need to know what your doing

U need to make sure all the air is squeezed out when fitted and use a jubilee clip.

If your unsure ask an adult to help you :p

I see your point mate, but the previous stretchy CV boot had only just been fitted at the dealers I bought the car from and lasted less than 500 miles!
Day to day driving conditions were fine, but under hard cornering(very different from drag strip conditions) this boot pinched on something and split.
The rigid nylon type boots seem far less likely to pinch and split than the rubbery/stretchy ones, hence the decission to split the CV joint.
And as my main use of the Clio, will be trackdays, I didn't really wana stick another stretchy boot on, considering my experience with the first one was less than great:(.
Thanks though.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
been a couple of years since i attempted rebuilding one (wrote it off as pointless) but aren't the ends of the shafts peened over to stop the spider slipping off the shaft?

I'm considering writing this whole shaft off and just seeing if I can buy a completely new unit, shaft, cv joints n all!!
Surely splitting the Cv joint from the shaft is the only way to fit a new outer CV boot??
