Driveshaft problem

So my inner driveshaft cover has split

Believe the only fix for this is a new driveshaft?? Is this a git to change?? I mean could I do it myself??

If not il get the place near me to do it.

Also I had my traction control and SERV light come on on Friday due to all the grease on there...I could feel the TC kicking in trying to hold the wheel then the lights would come on. This was happening just after pulling off.

Tried cleaning this off on Saturday and now the ABS/ESP and SERV light come on and stay on when I start the car FFS ...Id guess that this is due to all the grease?

can you not just fit a new boot? bit OTT putting a new shaft on just because the boot's split

I imagine the shaft is fucked...its been split like that for about a year now!

Its not a servicable item. As the boot is fitted inside the shaft i believe, rather than going over the top

may be something a reconditioner could help with. think new shafts are about £200ea/no exchange:dapprove:

You can buy a new boot... The same thing happened to my 172!

This seems to be a common misconception, the real reason is the amount of time (Labour) required to remove the shaft, fit the new boot, build the shaft back up and then re-fit actually works out more to be expensive than fitting a new shaft.

Hence why so many people opt for a new shaft!!

But if you are handy with car work it can be done in a few hours, IIRC the new boot kit cost me no more than £3.00

Gray is running a ph1 shaft tho I would have thought Ben, where as someone mentioned the other day has a boot that fits over the top... not a sealed unit.
Unsure if ph1 shafts are able to be used on ph2

You do have to take the drive shaft apart unfortunately, and build it back up with the new boot...

I think this is why most garages etc. fit a new shaft as the labour cost of repairing the old shaft out weighs the cost of a new shaft!

Hmm so if I took my car off the road for a few days I might be able to buy a new boot and build it back up???
