Driveshafts/ Axial Linkages/ Track rod ends - Cost to repair

Have just had a free 25 point check from Renault and they observed the following for which I havent got their price for repairing yet.
I will probably get these done at Renault or an independant specialist.

What should I be looking at for these????

1) N/S driveshaft outer CV boot split and leaking grease
2) N/S Axial joint linkage has a small amount of play [serious/cautious or should I not worry too much]
3) O/S track rod end appears to have a small amount of play in its balljoint.

ps, I dont have time to fit any of these myself, so i'm interested in fitted prices.

1)depends on the damage to the outer CV boot, if the clip has just broken then = £2
2)what are they refering to? CV joint? - new shaft (delete number 1) = cira £220ish for a shaft
3) about £50 fitted and aligned

Hi Fred,
I've just written out what they put on the check sheet in the comments box.

2) am I right in thinking they have to drop the gearbox to replace the driveshaft?

My cousin has a garage a couple of miles away from work, I might get his opinion on these items.
I keep promising myself that I should get my arse over to your place Fred - if only I wasnt so far away.

It ends up being another day off work to get things fixed. :(

I like having either a Renault stamp in the book/receipts or a reputable specialist such as yourself.
I will let you know what their prices come back in at on Monday.

Thanks for the quick reply.

takes 30min to swap a driveshaft (bit longer on the passenger side as you have to drain the gearbox oil, but no more than 45min)

my dad is changing the drive shaft on my 172 on the driver o/s today and its not a big job mate and the gearbox defintly doesnt have to come out. Ive got a brand new one from Euro Car parts for £89 mate!

^genuine ONLY (240ish a pop)

non genuine won't fit/will break in minutes

your ECP one will rub on the back of the engine block

Really?

Shite.

I left my old shaft round Mikes....

Only the CV that was knackard.

Oh, and 200+ on a driveshaft for a car worth 2k? Not being tight, but that's madness!

Break it, buy another, start again. ;)

But seriously I just had that done, which is just part of servicing... but singular expensive parts on a cheap car (imo) are often better sourced second hand.

I'm sure you people just decide not to tell me these things until I've gone out and sorted the issue.

Ah well, my car works, and that'll do me.

It was only the CV joint that was ruined anyway.

a massive pot hole on the M6 broke it! im abit skint at the mo as just put new rubber all round on her so one for ECP is all i can afford at the mo so ill see what happens guys, fingers cross as i need the car back for work lol

So mine will need a gearbox drain as it passenger side.
Can you get the cv joint on its own or can you only get it as part of the driveshaft?

Or is it false economy by replacing the cv joint on its own?

Went into renault today to havea service and the outer cv boot replaced [pinhole in it] and when I picked it up they hadnt done it because they said the inner cv boot was leaking and upon removing both said the driveshaft needs replacing.

Thing is, they quoted me and after a little discussion re-quoted me a better price with good discount on the parts and labour and it comes out at £135 fitted.

They say they will only use genuine Renault parts and reading what Fred said earlier, I cant see that they will be replacing the driveshaft ???? Confused.
Unless I'm really really getting a good discount.

Its on the report - new driveshaft required - quoted.

Back to this again.
Had the day off work again today, car booked in a week or so ago, took it down to get this sorted out before the school hols.

Picked it up and both n/s and f/s axial joint linkages had been replaced. Think from what I can see this is what Renault refer to as the track rods.

Collected it and asked if the dirveshaft fitted ok and the cv boot was not leaking any more.
Er, no, not done that. :(

I only had advisory that the track rod had slight play near side, but the recommendation was driveshaft and I'd been quoted for it.

So I ended up taking the car home without having to pay while they discuss why the right things havent been done.

BTW, they now re-quoted at £350 for a new driveshaft or £250 for a refurb one.

Took it to an independant Renault specialist a couple of miles away from my house and he stuck it on the ramps straight away and said outer CV Boot no problem - £45 fitted can do it whenever you like.
He said he certainly wouldnt be replacing the driveshaft as they all weep a little bit from the inner cv boot.

Why do things end up being so complicated and inconvenient? :dapprove:

erm hate to say it but you went to renault!

More fool me, should have come over to you Fred. My bad.

One day I will learn that to truly appreciate convenience is to get the job done correctly, by experienced trustworthy individuals, once and for all.

Thing is, i have a very good relationship with Honda [where I have my Type R serviced/repaired etc] and they did the MOT on the 182 and only said N/S cv boot and slight play in n/s track rod.
Their prices though with original renault parts were even higher than Renault!

I'll get the cv boot fitted for the sake of £45 and see how it goes.
Everything else is done now [even though its not been paid for....]
