Driving a new car home

Potentially going to look at a 172 that will need work so don't want to put a full years insurance on it for it to be off the road.

It's over an hour away so not really in the 'it'll be alright to nip home' bracket. I've got van and motorbike insurance and am named on our family car policy so what would be my best option to get home legally?

Once you collect the car and pay for it though, technically you own it! The other persons insurance would be void. You would have to transfer ownership once the car was safely home. Complicated legal stuff!

Best and safest way is to just do day insurance as you owning the car. Might cost a little more, but worth it's weight in gold if you are involved in a accident.

I paid about £45 for 24 hour insurance recently so get a car home. Moneysupermarket I think is where I got mine through.

Try downloading the “Cuvva” app. Used it a few times and you can even insure by the hour...

Put 172 in your name, get wife to drive it home.

every car has to have third party cover at least, so legally you can't do it that way.

I looked at temporary cover today but wouldn't cover for modified cars.

Had a look around for this before, some seem to stipulate that the car has to be insured third party at least but others (and supposedly confirmed by their insurance company) say that the car doesn’t.

Day insurance.
Get it towed or moved on a flatbed.
Get the owner to drive it to yours and do the paperwork when you get home.
Leave a healthy deposit, say 95%, get a friend to drive it to yours then call the owner and send money and do paperwork yourself as he's kindly left the V5 in the glovebox - assuming it's currently insured so you can do so.
Insure it and then cancel within the 'cool off' period.

Buy a years insurance then cancel it with in a few days. Done this with axa cost me about £3 and I was covered for the weekend.

Yeah, Cuvva don’t cover modified cars, or cars older than 10 years IIRC.

Definitley cover cars older than 10 years, unless they’ve recently changed their own policy?

Hire a flat bed 100/24hrs
