dvd editting software

I need to take a 20 second clip from a DVD that a client has supplied for his website. Is there a free program on the market I can use to do this?

use software to convert it to AVI first and then edit it?

eeek...converting dvd to avi is hideous!!

how big is the dvd and how is it encoded??

Its about 34 minutes long if thats any help.
