Easy question: why are 197 F1's called F1's?!

It was the celebrate Renault winning the F1 championship.

The F1 car is the R25 (I think) so the Megane was R26. Clio was R27.

Wasn't it R26 because that was the F1 car of that year, R27 same reasoning?

This sounds about right...

R26 won constructors, R27 was the one that was a let down. Do you think renault had this in mind when they did the special editions?

R27 isn't a let down!
One of those with full livery and body trimmings is still my personal favourite of the Mk.3's

Also both have similar peak piston speeds...

R27 is a let down as special editions go. No special options, no extra power, no slippy diff, just stickers.

R26 got slippy diff and 5 more horses and is the best of that shape megane with 5 seats...

Cup and Trophy are names of RenaultSport race series.

Clio Cup
Megane Trophy

The use of Cup and Trophy has been used on both Clios and Megane road cars though. Infact, there may have been Clio Trophy now I think of it, with the V6 clios...

Clio Williams was named after the F1 team they supplied engines to and because Williams had some input in development (I believe)
The Cup and Trophy names come from the names of one make championships RenaultSport run, namely the Clio Cup and the Megane Trophy
The R26 and R27 are names of that years F1 cars

Its all just marketing to tie together the RenaultSport brand across both track series and road cars. Its common practice. Vauxhall for example had the VX Racing team on track, and VXR branded hot road cars. Ford use the RS brand on road cars, which comes from Rally Sport from waaaaay back. Even the McLaren MP4/12C follows the same naming style as all their F1 cars since the mid 80s.

Its just marketing.

Williams had no technical input into the Clio Williams. Pure marketing.

LOL at the F1's sharing no components with the actual F1 cars. No s**t. The 200 has an F1 front wing though.

To be fair on the R27, it did basically have all the desirable options that you really should have been speccing (at the time) if you were thinking of buying a 197 for a cheaper price than what the options would have cost.

Cup pack, recaros, tinted windows and some rather dubious stickers made for quite a desirable Clio. And IIRC, LY was only ever available on the 197 in R27 form?

The dubious stickers were all part of the charm in my eyes.....well, on LY's anyway.

Wouldn't consider an R27 in any other colour

  Listerine & Poledo
Nope, sorry Roy, gotta disagree on this one. LY is the finish of kings

(not sure if trawling thoguh)

Nothing beats Nimbus. If you disagree then that's fine, but you need to comes to terms with the fact that you are wrong.

R27 at the time was the first 197 to have the Cup chassis, so it was worth it at the time imo

But as soon as they were sold the cup came out, and it was an option on normal cars. Which killed it as anything special IMO.

I used to love that! Wasnt it basically just a Williams underneath?

When you think about it Renault are epic at mad stuff like that!

That Espace was fantastic!

Saw it at Goodwood FoS. Heard this screaming F1 engine and turned around expecting to see some sleek F1 racer going up the hill, and saw a people carrier being hustled between the bales at alarming speed :)
