Ecu + Viper: What happens to warranty

Got myself a Viper fitted to my car, did a search on her and was alarmed at what people were saying about the vipers effect on the way the ecu deals with the fuel mixtures as a result of the increased efficiency of the filter, resulting in some cases in less power or lean fuel mixtures. I havent got the cold air feed fitted just yet as the piping that came with it was not long enough for it to reach just in front of the radiator. (I’ll be on the blower tomorrow)

It seems that the consensus is to get either a re-map or replacement ecu. My question to all those in the know is how is this going to affect the warranty? Ive heard that the Rsport Ecu can be swapped, then changed when it comes to servicing, but does anybody know where they stand on the viper being fitted as the current air box is brand new and sitting in the shed, so i cant just swap that back when servicing is due. Do you think i should contact the Renault person i have been dealing with and pose some of these questions in hypothetical circumstances?

You can change the ecu back quite easy back for warently work if you think the mod is to blaim for the damage or that Renault will be difficult with a moded car. But Renault have to prove that the mod was the reason for the failure.

A moded intake wont have any impact in my opinion as its supposed to be freer flowing ie better than stock. No warently work can be blaimed on the viper.

For servicing why change back they cannot refuse to service the car as its moded its only warently work then can kick up about.

I cannot see how a moded intake will cause any running problems with a different ecu I think the group N one (RSport one) runs fine with intake + exhaust mods. as this is what the Cup racers use.

Yeah but they will be able to tell you have swapped the ECU, marks on the ECU box/bolts/screws try and be very very careful when swapping it.

most dealers dont really bother unless its the modified parts you fit thats causing the problem

It is a different ecu on the Cup Racers.

I would say mods affecting the warrenty depends entirely on the relationship you have with the service manager & how flexible they are.

Yep soory your right the cup racer one is a Mk 1 ECU from the 172 ie not DBW. I was refering to the R sport one (I think nick hill sells it as well)

i dont think its even off the mk 1 if i remeber correctly its a totally different management system a magnetti whatsit one :)

Sweet, spoke with the dealer, they say that as long as what has been modified hasnt caused whatever needs the warranty work done to it then its fine.

Err Im not 100 sure tonycart is the best person to ask as he knows about the racing of them. Im under the impression that offical cup racing is with Mk1 none DBW ecus which are group N modified. I imagine that new cup racers will be able to use the Mk2 DBW ECUs soon and so they Ecu have been made group N ready already. They can sell more group N ECUs to modders than to the racers themelves so they make them.

The group N ecu is only availiable at the moment for the cups as it doesnt have the other 172 mods on it. Although some people say it can be done to get a group N chip on a 172.

nope the cup racers use the magnetti marelli ECU with a std sealed engine (different intake, hence headlight hole) and orbi exzaust IIRC = bout 185 - 190bhp plus the small matter of the suspension and gearbox!!! brakes are std just with different pads IIRC
