I was recommended this forum after posting my query on moneysavingexpert.com - apologies if this should in the Technical section but I couldn't see a relevant category in there!
On Sunday, the driver's side window of my 52 Clio Extreme started misbehaving. :S At first when I was driving it kept on going up without me touching the button - then when I got home the window would go down but not back up! I checked the fuse box and poked at the wires connecting the dashboard to the door, but could not get the window to go back up. So I was left on a very windy night with an open window that I had to cover up with black bags and a cardboard box!
I took it to my local Renault Minute on Monday morning and having looked at the wires and the switch itself they now believe that the problem is to do with the ECU (electronic control unit) and have quoted nearly £400 for a replacement. I called an independent garage in Wembley but they think that if the problem is with the ECU that only a main dealer can fix it as the device is coded to the car. It's a lot of money so I need to be sure that this really is the problem and also that nowhere else locally (I live in West London, W4) would be able to fix it.
Does anybody know how likely it is that the ECU is at fault or had similar problems with the electric windows?
Apart from windscreen wipers that stopped working 2 years ago (which was fixed with a firm poke to the wiper motor!) I've had no other problems with the electrics so really expected it just to be a short circuit or dodgy wire and not £400 worth of ECU!! A few respondents on moneysavingexpert.com suggested that the ECU was more involved in things like the injection system rather than simple electronics like the windows and advised me to get a second opinion before agreeing to the work being carried out.
Thanks for your help!!
