Was changing the rear pads on my 182:

The piston on the rear calipers winds out, but not back in again.

I have no room to fit my pads in....

How do I get them to go back in again???



I cant drive back home without my rear brakes.... help help help.
 


err... you sure your winding the right way?

you may have wound it out too far and its come off its thread?

Push it in as you wind it omar.

Basically its a constantly adjusting mechanism to ensure the pads always receieve the same pressure.

Try removing the cap from the brake fluid resevoir to ease the pressue at the same time as winding back in. (Its under the engine cover, back left as you look at the engine)
 


Reservoir cover is released...

I cant really push as I wind without taking the disc off, which I cant do because I dont have a socket big enough.

lol, its so much easier with a 30mm socket.

umm... dont know what to suggest but to get a 30mm socket on the discs really.
 


use one screwdriver to wind the piston and another screwdriver or some big grips to apply pressure to the piston.
 


remove the caliper and screw the pistons back as you push it in , remember to unclip the handbrake cable from the caliper as the piston screw sometimes doesnt engage back into the slot .

All sorted chappies...

Im very grateful for all of your help guys, and Clarkie thanks for helping me out on your day-off.

You wont believe what came out of my front brake system:

*Three out of four of the pads had separated from their backing plates.

*One pad was cracked all way down the middle.

*All looked like theyd been in a barbeque- the paint on the them was charred, and crumpled off into ash.

*All had a nice shiny glass look.

Not good.

Anyways... did some digging, and AFAIK:

Std 182 pads = Ferodo pads = Halford pads (all from the same factory).

So, a set of pads for front and rear cost me: £35 in total (thank god for halfords!!)

Bled the system too - super dot four went-in... and what looked like diet-coke came-out!



Went for a 5 mile bed-in session... already theyre starting to bite (although theyre getting hot quite quickly).

Id forgotten what the brakes on my car were like! Pedal feel is back to normal too.

Pheeeew, thats another curry well-deserved!

took my calipers off today as i was removing the wheel hubs... try doing that oms see how hard it is lol (f**king things) took pads off front... well on the pass side... and 1 of the pads has 1-2mm of material left lol.... took it out dropped it on the floor and a chunk fell off lol... need to borrow mums golf tomorrow to go get some pads... thinking halfrauds is the place to go lol
 


pain... yeh lots of lol skinned knuckles lol, brembo discs on front, 16v calipers, pagid fast road pads...

to take hubs off u have to:
remove wheel
caliper
disk
hub bolt
track rod end
suspention bolts
bolts under the hub...

then it pulls off if your driveshaft slips out... mine didnt but i have a hub puller so fixed that lol... track rod end took about 2 hours lol... f**king thing !! was sooo hard... jacked the arm up to put presure on it (jack is f**ked seals gone...) then take the nut off the top... but the taper wasnt gripping and was slipping... got nut half way off and it stopped wouldnt come off... heated it up to melt the nyloc.... that didnt work lol dremmel out to cut it off cut a bit in got the spanner to turn it round to do the other side and it undid ARGH!


during this i managed to get my hand squished by the jack... took the hub off and the bearing fell to pieces lol so now tomorrow i gotta go get the bit thats stuck in pulled out and a new 1 pressed in.... then refit it all... decided to service it at the same time... some how managed to spill a sh*t load of oil on the drive.... then pulled bottom rad hose off coolant everywhere (i expected this) mixed with oil and drive was a mess cleaned it all up.... forgot to put sump plug in and well... oil dripped out on the now clean drive FFS lol
 


Sounds like a right pain!



PS You know the easybleeders?

Well, if you ever use one, make sure its airtight! I had superdot4 ALL over the place today....

Oms,

Do you have to use some special gizmo when bleeding the brakes? Ive read that when bleeding the brakes on a car with ABS you need to activate the ABS to get all the old fluid out!

I used an easybleed...

(pressurises brake fluid, and rams it in while you bleed it).

I believe theres a specific order to doing it, but Im not the expert (pretty obvious from this thread, lol).

Start a new thread, and well see what we can come-up with for you.
 


oms.. get some willwoods or brembos or something. my pads simply slide a pin out, slide the pad out, slide new pad in, slide pin back in. done in minutes!
 


It does beg the question why you didnt just spend £20 and get a brake wind back tool that applies pressure and winds in at the same time...

Piece of piss to do then.

I had no idea that they needed winding.

I thought they were like the fronts, hence the shock and panic.
