Emissions warning light - 197

My r27 is in with Stockport, originally took it in for "check emission" light. They said the wiring had been fixed "poorly" so wouldn’t be covered by the warranty (I’m the third owner, pitfalls of buying a used car) and for the honour of fixing to their standard it would be £500. After much thought decided to get it done as any work is covered for 12 months. They replaced the oxygen senors, wiring etc, all they said they would need to do to fix it. They did all the repairs, drove it away and 50 miles later the light was back on. Took it back, they looked at it and "couldn’t find a fault with it". They cleared the fault code and I took it away. 90 miles later, yep back on. Back it went. Had more tests yesterday and again this morning and more this afternoon they say. How many tests can a car have??!! Sounds to me as tho they havnt got a clue.

Has anyone got an idea what the prob might be / past experience? Possible corrosion all the way to the ecu?

I hope you didn't pay the £500 if they haven't fixed the fault? My megane 225 throws the emissions light (it flashes for a while) about once a month then goes away, but there is never a fault stored.

Are oxygen sensors the same as Lambda sensors? As if not that's the first thing I would have changed. Mine is fucked and emissions light comes on from time to time, however I have a code reader which allows me to clear it off myself :)

My 182 does it now and again also flashes sometimes then goes off, it also says in the handbook if you have been giving it a thrashing to slow down and let it go off. Does your warning light go off again or is it still on all the time?

Its on all the time.

i had the car on some ramps before i took it (while mulling over the price) and could see one of the wires running parralel to the exhault was corroded. Also couldnt see how far that had got so decided it was best to just let thme do it.

As for the £500 im definatly questioning that. if it turns out to be something else, which at this stage it does, i will be asking for it back! Unfortunately i did pay it when i picked it up after they said it had been fixed. They must have cleared the error code so i assumed it was all ok. :S

I would not be happy about that, have you been back to see them since? I would get back down to them and ask them to either resolve the problem properly or give you your money back, did they give you a bill/list of things they did to the car? Or justify why it cost £500?

Get it back down to them and ask them to sort it! Does the car have a decat or anything? I'd be also asking for my money back, cause they clearly aint fixed it! Did you pay by cheque? If so stop the cheque!

im not happy no. the car is still with them now.

yeh they did give me a bill with the detail, pretty much 50/50 with parts and labour from memory, dont have it with me now. I just trusted that it had been done as the light wasnt on, misplaced it seems.

Can only wait to see what they come back with.

no its totally standard.

payed by debit card unfortunately.

they know how p*ssed off i am, also given someone at Renault UK an ear full but they say any issue is with the dealer and they trust the dealer to repair it to the expected standard, typical corp BS

Hopefully they'll find the fault. Just make sure they only charge you for what the fault was tho. I wouldn't pay for a load of work that didn't need done!

From your original post, what wiring were they referring to when they say it was done poorly? It seems a bit fishy...either way, if they do not find the solution get your money back...seems like a lot of money though.

I would get your money back and take the car to a specialist.

Birchdown are only a bit outside of Manchester.

i hope so too stu, definatly not going to let it go until i know exactly what it was and how they fixed it and get my money back if its unrelated.

Oink - the wiring was crap, i could see that from when it was on the ramps. Basically they had cut part of the wire and replaced with a new section and plug and soldered. It must have worked because its been fine for the previous 10 months i have had the car but thats what Renault said was causing the problem.

I would do what TheBoosh said, get your ££ back and take it to a specialist and have it done properly.

This happened with my last Clio 1.4. They replaced the coils, then the lambda, then couldnt find anything after a week, and then again they had it for 6 bloody weeks and STILL couldnt find the fault nor replicate it. I ended up having to buy the current Clio. Guess what happened. Same friggen light. Put it on a mates OBD II code reader to get a Random Misfire fault on it. But the battery went flat over Xmas so the fault was gone by the time I got her into Renault. Not happy. But the car seems to be ok, despite rough idle.

wow, that sounds bad shorty. my car runs fine, just the error message.

out of interest, what did you do with the old clio? did renault buy it off you?
