Engine bay cleaning

So what do people on here use to keep it all clean, steam? Jetwash? Spray and cloth?
With all the sensors and wiring i've always been to wary to let loose my Karcher on the engine bay and I think steam would have the same effect. I've seen people using some sort of spray to clean plastics etc but their are so many hard to reach places in the Clio engine bay.
I've never gave cleaned it properly in all the time i've had my car and it's starting to let the side down so what would you all recommend?

I might take a trip down to Halfords in the morning and see if they have that then, what can it all be used for? It's basically dusty and oily but with so many different types of materials under their I wasn't sure what to use. Fubar you sound like you've done it before so give me and idea of the things you would clean to give it the best look?

As Fubar, using as little water as possible, working in small sections drying as you go.

Polish the metalwork and paintwork and jobs a good 'un.

I posted this in another thread

I would do it a little at a time, using as little water as possible.

Spray a small amont of Autogylm degreaser on a chosen area, agiate with a soft brush for a few seconds to start it working, rinse of with a small amount of water or even better just a damp cloth, dry as best you can with a towel, move onto the next area. Doing a small area at a time saves gettingt he whole engine and parts you dont want to get wet.

Cover anything you dont fancy getting wet with plastic bags or cling film if your really worried.

After dress plastics and hoses with something like Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber, polish the paintwork with Autoglym Super Resin and any shiny metalwork such as the aircon pipes with metal polish.

Cleaned using the above method:

Wow that's impressive!! I have 2/3 things on your list need to get some degreaser and i'm all set. I've had my car 3 years even had the engine out but never once have gave it all a really good clean, now I have the motivation it will most likely be peeing it down in the morning!lol
I'll aspire to come as close as I can to having it as clean as that 306

don't jetwash it whatever you do, the garage i recently bought my 182 from done this, and i ended up having to take it to renault to get fixed as it died on me :(

Rich - are you sure we can use metal polish on the air con pipes? had never occured to me but should make them look pretty good

You sure can, I polished all mine up with Autoglym, they soon go matt again due to the the mositure that sits on them in use on a hot day.

Tim... Thanks. I know a few people have said this to me... but I can never remember who asked.. I might one day, but it will be a long time yet as its part of the family. I have everything mapped out on paper left to do now so I can visualise how its going to look when its all finished :) Just bought a few more bits.

That looks extremely well looked after Zonda think your just showing off with all your cleaning products though lol.
I went into Halfords today for the Autogylm engine and machine cleaner and it must have been about the only one of their products they didn't have what other kind of places sell this?

Thanks Zonda theirs so much on ebay i'm tempted to get a little collection like yours!I've got the normal things like polish, glass cleaner, dash spray etc but recently i've been cleaning my car a lot so want to get some of the good stuff. For the last 3 years i've been using white polish on a black car and it's a nightmare to get the residue of so that's first on my list.
What would people say the best brand in terms of how good the products are and value for money?

I've got Autogylm super resin polish and one in a rectangle shaped blue tub which I can't remember the name off. The wax I had was cheap crap someone had given me back on my birthday. When I was up at Halfords they had a lot of Megiars(sp?) wasn't exactly cheap though.

Just had a look on Halfords website it's called Mer car polish. I've always fancied trying to clear wax they sell is it any good?

I used to use a few Meguiars products.. I still use there Gold Class car wash/conditioner. It almost looks polished just after a wash with that stuff.. :) (and the drying microfibre towl is also very good and save time drying if u'r lazy like me)

I now only use the Meguiars quick detailer now ...but I can recommend that, as I like it. If you only need to do a quick job when the car has lost its shine.. it takes 20 minutes to go around the whole car with that and looks great. But you would need to have prepared the car before hand as it just brings back the good work you have done before by spending hours polishing / waxing.

My fave wax is P21-s... cant find any on ebay at the mo.. but its the best finish I have had from any other product.. but I am just a keen car cleaning freak... not like some of the real car detailers on here.

So they will give u better advice... :)

You can take detailing (waxing etc) really a long way.. and some of it is a bit too much for my small brain to understand the physics of it all.. lol.. so I just use the products I like best.. :D

Lol that sounds a good way to go about it.
So if you were buy a car and were going to valet it totally what steps would you go through and what products would you use?

Rich that impressive what the hell did you use to do that?
John I see your from Edinburgh I stay in West Lothian if you get my engine bay to look like that theirs some beers in it for you!
