John I see your from Edinburgh I stay in West Lothian if you get my engine bay to look like that theirs some beers in it for you!

I work in Livingston mate. Bit busy just now but maybe in the near future i could give it a go for ya...

Rich, a half hearted attempt to start underneath the car however i sold it before it really got fully underway.

No probs John with the weather just now it might be best to wait a little while!I stay in the new houses just of the a89 if you know it so not far!
That last pic looks good how long do you think it would stay that way though?Only thing that ruins it is the rusty looking backing plate and the axle would the engine and machine cleaner I see have been any good on things like that?

Immense Rich, was it just a case of getting some axle stands and a flask of tea?

Just a case of getting it up in the air, losts of scrubbing with warm water, Autoglym Engine and Machien Cleaner, Tar Remover and Super Resin Polish. Once done it just meant wipe over with a damp cloth etc before a show really.

Only thing you can do is paint or replace the parts. I took the paint option on mine using Hammerite paint mixed as close as I could to the factory colours

The 306 had black underseal under the main floorpan, which I just cleaned up woth soapy water, it seems to stay sticky for years. Some people strip this all off back to paint, I was planning to reapply another coat to the parts it was already on to freshen it up but then sold the car. On the parts that did not have it I just apply normal polish and sealant. Wax oil type coatings are worth it on older cars that are prone to rust and dont have the coatings under the paint that modern cars have.

watch getting too much water on the 172/182 engine as the water can find its way down the plug holes and cause problems.....

I've never been a fan of using a jetwash on electrics the first time I saw somebody do it I couldn't believe my eyes even more so when they got in an it started no problem. If corrosion sets in on electrics though it can be quite hard to find the fault so i'd rather take my time and do it right.
Rich that looks brand new I don't think I have the patience to go to those lengths but credit where credits due.
Dave I stay in the new houses that were built recently between Broxburn and Uphall backing onto the a89 if you know it?

^ lol, Persimmon Homes if I recall! Or it could be the Bryant ones? Too many houses in Broxburn now, they were all parks when I was a nipper! ;)

Yep Persimmon homes not the houses at the lights but just at the back.
I know what you mean about the lights lol don't see the point in them as they're are only about 15 houses up that road so far. West Lothian council at it's best no doubt.

One of my mates swears by running the engine to let the bay warm up nicely, then spraying the lot with WD-40, turning off the engine and closing the bonnet.

Anyone know if this is a good idea? I didn't want to agree or disagree with him just yet.

WD40 wont "clean" the engine bay.... it might make everything look shiny for a little while... because its covered in oil!!!
If anything it would make it worse because road dust and dirt would settle on the oil and stick :S
