Engine Building Questions. SidewaysDanny,Stan etc

  172
Ok guys im rebuilding an F7R engine with valve damage (cambelt snapped)
Ive decided to freshen up the whole bottom end, new shells, ARP rod bolts, new rings etc.

First question is what Hone to use for the cylinders?? Ive got a honing tool that ive used for other engines (no idea what grade) but id rather buy the correct grade hone, theyre not expensive so not worth the risk, standard rings BTW. Piston cooling jets, can these be left in?

Secondly the breather system differences from 172 - 182 head. Am i right in thinking i can use a 172 head with a 182 plenum aslong as i bolt the 182 breather plate to the 172 head?

Cheers me dears

Guessing you mean F4R.

I did a load of research and took advice from suppliers and machinists on buying a hone tool a while back, believe it was a 320 grit "bobble hone" that was bought in the end. Used in conjunction with a very good machining oil i managed to get a good bore finish. I did practice on a scrap block for a fair while to get a consistent technique and not remove excessive material though. Think you'll be surprised by the cost of a good hone tool. not worth buying for a 1off IMO. avoid 3 legged honing tools at all costs.

Breathers aren't too hard to sort, use the correct breather plate for the engine, 172 plenum should fit on the 182 head and just miss out 1 bolt at the back which wont make any real difference

Yea meant F4R, silly me!

The one ive got is a 3 legged one, didnt wanna use that on mine tbh. Ive seen the bobbly ones but if theyre expensive then probaby best paying a machine shop to hone it for me, Its not like im gonna be using it often.

The breather plate ive been looking at today and shouldnt be a problem.

Another thing I mean to ask about was head skimming and block decking. Ive only ever had heads skimmed in the past if theyre warped. Is there any benefit or drawback of skimming and decking?? CR will obviously be raised but unsure wether its worth paying for these if they dont need doing?

Cheers mate.

i prefer to use pistons to raise CR, but a head skim isn't a bad way to bring it up. A light skim of the head is a good idea to get it perfectly flat

I've got a dremel and sand paper...

When do you want me to come round?

Lol, ive already got those! So unless your good at making tea then dont bother!!

Engines stripped at work anyway, getting payed to rebuild my own engine FTW!!

Might as well make me a cup if you're going round. Coffee, black, no sugar thankyouplease ;)

Take it to a decent machine shop, get it plateau honed on a proper boring bar.

Head skimming and block decking are a must really, again a machine shop will do this.
Though you're not going to see anything substantial on the Cr front.
