Engine failure - thoughts...

So having just had a full cambelt service inc. dephaser pulley etc, PMS Aircon delete, new crank sensor, head and sump resealed , new clutch and fly wheel, the engine on my 182 let go 3 laps into Oulton Park track day yesterday (first time out since all the work was done)

took it straight to garage who look after the car and took cambelt cover off and could see bits of rubber / slightly frayed, also oil deposits.

Then took manifold off, to find this in inlet manifold along with other bits of metal, and then took the spark plugs out to find number 3 had had an abrupt meeting with the piston.

also tried to spin the wheels whilst in gear and this wasn’t turning the engine at all.

No snapped belts and cam timing still looks to be aligned.

Head coming off next week and engine out to try and come to a conclusion on the cause and also extent of damage internally.

All a bit of a mess tbh, I’m expecting it to mean a new engine atm, and trying to think of the best / most cost effective way to get up and running again (just buying a new car not really an option as a lot spent on the rest of the car)

what are people thoughts / opinions, or too early to really say until finished taking the thing to bits?

timing's out and valves dropped get a replacement

Valve snapped. Not necessarily due to timing out but probably just due to giving it a thrashing.
Standard valves are known to fail like this although I’ve also had a Supertech valve fail for no apparent reason too.

Snap! I only managed half a lap. Just had all belts done as a precaution. Idled like it had a cam and didn’t pick up well after 4K revs. It was the first time I used it so didn’t know what to look out for. In other good new the replacement £300 gumtree engine is going strong 13 trackday and 2 ring trips later!

That piece you're holding is a valve seat.

It's either that or the valve head that's dropped.

Did you hit the limiter a few times?

Sorry to hear this mate. Mine went in a similar scenario. Looks like a valve seat as mine was. Difference with mine being the valve seats weren't checked after one of the pulleys gave in causing bent valves.

Ok thanks mate, was still warming the car up so hadn’t hit the limiter at all, but it went at about 5.5k on full power coming out the banked hairpin.

If anyone knows of an engine for sale would be interested to take a look.

Luckily the engines are cheap and easy to fit.

The price of the engine was almost 4 years ago! The old engine still gets used. Arguably more than the new one....

New engine got delivered today, hopefully fitted next week and out before end of Jan 👍
