Engine light on but and N/A code

My Engine warning light keeps coming on but when I plug the car in to get the fault code and rest it I just get a N/A code. To add recently the car hasn't started as cleanly as the past. Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like a crap code reader or an out of date database. Plug it in to something decent and it will tell you whats wrong.
