Engine loosening

  Astra VXR 17/05/07

Ive read the threads about running in etc and people keep going on about their engines loosening up nicely and all that...

So whats the tell tale signs that this is happening ?

gearbox will feel more worn in, ie it will go into 1st easier. wen u rag it the 1st time, go round the bak and smell the zorst. it will smell a bit burnt- thats prob due to the fact that its the "2nd half of the engine" has been used - ie high revs. and the exahaust is burning off all the stuff on its surface that is prob left from the factory or something. ive done 1900miles now almost, and it feels pretty much fine, and ive done !22 in it and i think all the parts have been worn in nicely. only bad point is the gearbox and the clutch, still very jumpy from 1st to 2nd wen cold, but my m8 clio is the same and hes done 18,000 miles!!!

Shockingly bad

Ive allready ragged it and didnt think to go and smell the exhaust

The gearbox getting looser always meant to me..the gearbox was looser !!!

Is that the only way you can tell if your engine is loosening up nicely as people keep mentioning ?

more free-revving, happier to go to +6,000rpm etc. ALso feels more responsive and when you do truly thrash the sh*te out of it, they really shift. :)

si172s right, thats how u can feel the difference

Funkyjahooner, yeah, renault gearboxes are possibly the worst gearboxs ive ever had... on gear changes when cold, the renault gearbox is particularly bad - compare it to the likes of a VW gearbox when cold, and the difference really shows. They also tend to be notchy, even when warm, particularly 2nd gear in clios, not totally sure why. I have a friend with a megane that first brought it to my attention that it wasnt just my car, and that gearboxes are poor on renaults.

yes it will just feel a bit more quicker/livelier. renault boxes are a bit sh*te but they normally get a bit smoother with mileage/use.

hate to sound stupid, but isnt that done on a service? the cars done 46k and is a T plate, so id assume this would have been done? due another service a wee while ago, not taken it in yet as i didnt really have time :(

gear oil isnt changed on services anymore they are considered filled for life now. There was a tech note released a while ago which said to try some new gear oil first before dismantling the gearbox.

Well Ive just gone over 1000 miles in my 182 and Ive had a brand new gearbox fitted today . Does this mean I have to go easy on the new box for a certain period then? Obviously my engine is now run in...

Also, has anyone else dropped their engine oil after the run-in period? I was considering doing this, but it means finding out what is decent oil to replace it with etc...
