engine noise!!

  clio 182
Was suppose to have my car back today, the second hand engine has been fitted all plum'd in new filter, filled with oil ect...

Garage rang me and have said its sounding really 'groggy' and they advice i leave it there untill tomorrow to see if its still sounding the same, i asked is it because the engine has probably been sitting for a few months and the oil has sunk to the bottem of the engine, also all the pistons are dry ect, so given the chance to 'lube' up it should be ok, but he said if that was the case it should miss a little but it hasnt it fired and started first time....!!!

any ideas???

FAO matt @ the renault breakers... How long was the engine out of the car for???

thanks

Have they put a new cam belt on it by any chance? If so the timing is probably way out and the groggy/tapping noise is valves on pistons!

Cheers

Nope he said he hasnt changed the cam belt, hes just fitted the replacement engine straight in, the guys starting to f**k me off!!! The replacement engine i had didnt come with the air inlet thing on top.. could that have anything todo with it??

I would advise a Cam belt change unless you know the condition of this is good. What inlet 'thing' are you reffering to swell?

I put a new engine in my 172, replaced the aux and timing kit since i didnt really know the previous history. New oils, coolent, plugs. pretty much a full service. How much is all this costing if you dont mind me asking?
Mine sounded terrible a few days after, almost like a diesal. Took it to another garage to get it checked out and they said the timing was miles out and they actually twisted the cam a little trying to tension. Its all running perfect now but just make sure they get the timing spot on.

yes the plennum, went to see it this morning, on idle the car sounds normal, but once it's warm and you rev it, it sound's really rattly!

only way i can describe the sound is as if a bolt or something similar is in the plennum and when i rev its sounds like its jumping about.

J12 WYT - engine cost £850, fiting hahaha dont know yet

The guy said he wouldnt need to do the timeing because nothing has been changed on the engine...

would he still need to do it???

cheers

That sounds awfully like a possible big end failure to me. Quite at idle and at very low loads but blip it and it rattles?

They did put some oil in it before firing it up didn't they?

Cheers

yes all new oil ect, i was there friday morning sounded spot on on idle and at a slight rev, but as soon as you give it the beans the rallte is there and its very loud its not like tapping its a full on rattle!!

whats the difference between the 182 and 172 engine? apart from the bhp. Could i have been sent a 172 engine by mistake?? or would fitting be an issue?

Theres a few difference, maily on the manifold. Shouldn't make any difference on how the engine runs when its in the car. Sounds like big end problems to me. Whats the engines history?

couldn't tell you iv bought it off Matt of Renault breakers off of here, all the paper work is with the engine in the garage, Matt said its 30k ish on the clock back end damage to the car that it came out of...

but my warranty runs out the end of this month so something has to be sorted by the end of this month otherwise the engine is out of warranty..

as long as you have reported the warranty i'm pretty sure thay have to honor it.

I'd get timings checked 1st. I would have thought it would be standard practice.

It rattles when the engine is heats up, its as if something is poping about in there, given a blip of the gas and the rattle gets louder, its all revs tbh...
