Engine noises

my 1.2 8v (w reg mk2 ph1) has just started making a wierd noise at 3k +. The only way to describe it is a whirrring sound similiar to a super charger


Any ideas?

(mileage is at 104000 so my initial thoughts are just age but it wasnt making the noise before)

no warning lights on at all. oil is all ok (checked today)
