Engine oil grade

I have a 19yr old Renault Clio which is suppose to take 10/40 oil. I was just wondering for her age if it's better to have a slightly thicker or thinner oil to help lubicate parts like the Pistons??

Thanks

Just go with the recommended 10w40 IMO - some people say you should use thicker oil in older cars to make up for internal wear but, personally, I think that might well just put more strain on the oil pump.

If you're using it in the depths of winter, 5w40 will get round quicker when you start up but still have the same thickness when hot, so either 5w40 or10w40 should be just fine.

The local dealer should be able to get 5litres of the Renault-recommended Elf 5w40 for, what, £20-25?

What engine is it ? Just use the recommended grade never usually any need to go thicker on a road car.
