Engine rattle, water pump? Vid inside

I can do, can you help me with a bit more info? So the tensioner seems to bolt on using a hex bolt? Then once the new pumps on and the belt is routed correctly, I either:

Tension the spring with a jubilee enough to get both e-torx bolts in place ? Then once the jubilee is released the tension is in place ?

Or I was thinking of buying the above tool with the 1/2" bit and filing it down to 3/8" and using that?

No one?

Ordering the aux kit and coolant tomorrow then im good to go. Not sure if this tensioner tool will work so jubilee is on backup.

Seems to be no help atm on the tensioning side, but if anyone is bored Id like to know weather to use the water pump gasket dry or with a touch of gasket sealant on?

So the pump is changed, I think from this picture its an indication the bearing was starting to fail and the impellers touch the block... but after a LOT of agg including popping the brake reservoir out of the master cylinder yesterday... its all back together and runs, sounds better there was a slight bearing noise on when reving slightly that seems to have improved.

But the noise is still there. after the many hours spent on it im just glad to have it running again.

The noise in the first video sounds like the top of the engine but I cant pin point it. dephasers changed it doesn't sound diesel'y.

Any ideas? feel like It could be the exhaust cat bolts but the noise seems more above the engine.

Somebody must have a suggestion please? if its not the water pump, not the aux belt, or idlers etc.

It doesn't match the beat of the engine, its slower... Its clacky etc... any suggestions?

I just had to do this to diagnose a suspected noisy second hand alternator as at first the noise sounded like it was coming from the cam pulley area but once the belt was off the noise disappeared .

I would have started the engine up with the belt off had I not needed the car running asap and thinking the pump would solve the noise, I will think about taking the belt off again and running the engine so see if its the alt or steering pump then.

Im thinking very slightly possibly a loose spark plug? no where for it to go other than to rattle with the plenum on top?

Will investigate tomorrow.

Ok so I'm expecting no sympathy what so ever but (engine still runs before anyone laughs at me)

I had a ex mechanic friend look over the engine, we discussed every possibility, he listened to the engine in various places through a screwdriver, we discussed what had been replaced and what had'nt. We ended on the fact that the engine ran fine, we had the cam cover off and the cam pulley and dephaser pulley seemed fine, yes we didn't check the idler at this point and he said its a risk game driving it avoid it if you can when you next get a chance take the aux belt off, if the rattle goes you've found your problem like you all have been saying.

I had to pick my girlfriend up from somewhere, the car ran fine all the way there, it was only 10 mins away, on the way back in 5th I heard what I thought was a spark plug blown out of the engine, Id say it sounded like a card in a bicycle wheel as a kid, sounded like air popping to me, I pulled straight to the side of the road, no fault lights engine was still running, because I had to wait for the cars to clear to turn into a lay by.

I called the RAC purely because I thought there was no way for me to drive home if it was a blown spark plug. he arrived 20 mins later, we turned the engine over, sods law there was no noise at all, revved it, no noise, he looked over the car I explained what had been changed, what I thought it was, he said yep but a blown spark plug would most likely make the sound all the time.

He said he would follow me home, it made the same noise on the way home, like a fizzing flapping noise, he listened to the engine all over, he also used the screwdriver method, I asked cam belt idler? he said it sounds smooth as to me, the same with the cams and lifters, we tried the AC on he explained its most likely either the AC pump seized over time or the power steering.

We went for a drive around the block, there was nothing so its an intermittent problem, but in a straight line 5th gear up a hill there it was, it sounded like something was caught in the wheel but it wasn't. sounded like a fizzy flappy sound.

On full lock the power steering made a slight hissing sound but he said that might be normal for full lock, he also said the power steering fluid was quite hot. Lovely bloke, had all the wheels up span them round saying it may have been a failed wheel bearing.

After a lot of looking around he could not pin point the problem, he really did go out of his way he could have just buggered off, he said if you want double check the spark plugs but he agreed that taking the aux belt off would be the best bet first off.

Yes I know I shouldn't have driven the car but I needed to so Im not fussed tbh, the problem seems to be something on the way out, I tipped the bloke for his time, the main reason I've typed this all out is just an update, the belt will be taken off to see if the rattle goes, but I would like to know if the rattle does go, how do I decide weather its the power steering pump or the AC pump? seeing as the fluid was hot, and there was a hissing im wondering if its that.

Im thinking maybe its locking up and it caused the pish pish pish noise?

And yes I can take it to a specialist and I agree that is the best method but time is money, and I have some spare time, I would rather find the problem myself and then if needs be pay a garage to fix the problem. If possible I'd like to change it myself and save more money.

I already saved 300 in labor changing the water pump.

Very much so mate, I finished work early today, can't face taking the belt off but whilst I've got some time I checked it wasn't a spark plug, all tight and clean.

Hope to have the belt off tomorrow or next day, the noise was weird, I think the pump tried to lock up of that's possible and the belt was slipping, it was a flapping noise.

Right the plugs where checked amongst many other things today by me. Didn't have time to get the belt off, but I am pretty certain the problem is the power steering pump now, if when the belt off the rattle is gone I think the power steering pump will be changed.

After id checked the plugs and various other things when starting up the engine any slight turn of the wheel resulted in the noise below, hard to hear above the engine but its louder in person.

fluid is not low or anything

How much is a new pump ? will an aftermarket one be fine? and If I've tackled the water pump myself doing this should be just as much work but doable ? will look on the workshop manuals now.

After some searching I think the pump is around £150 including VAT if the price hasn't shot up. that's no so bad considering the belt kit is already on.

Wheres best to drain the PAS fluid from? is it dextron 2 that needs to be used for new fluid?

Also whats this flange that needs pushing on?

Fluid is ordered, aux belt is tight as, so it must be the pump? held on full lock it feels like the pump doesnt want to turn but the aux is being slowed down by it.

Would love a bit of input anyone please? want to try and get the pump ordered tomorrow... the only thing I can see being a problem is the pulley has to be pulled off and pressed on?

Hope to god this cures the rattle.

I'd still try and run it without the belt on as if u get a pump and fit it all up and it still makes the noise you will be real pissed off. I had mine on and off 3 times the other day to find my fault even though I was pretty sure what it was but needed to confirm before I ordered the new part. .

Yeah I think I will, problem is I have to drive to my grandads flat drive across the road before lifting the car up, cant on mine as its on a slope, makes things annoying because he needs his space so Ill have to refit the belt only to take it back off again when the pump arrives.

Have a price for the pump. Do they come with no pulley attached? Ive found a pulley puller for £8 delievered, will I need this? and what can I use to press it back in?

I have a PS pump which was replaced under warranty by renault 3 years ago. Cover the postage and it's yours :)

Pulley is bolted on.

Cheers for the offer mate I will keep it in mind, I've taken the bumper off and ran the car, I can hear the pas pump making the noise it does in the video, but I can't be sure its the rattle so I've asked a member on here who I've been taking to if he can come and have a listen first before I continue.
