Engine Rebuild Options (Mike, James & Chip & Techy People, Advice appreciated)

Oh good stuff, didn't think they where available.

Yes still available, for a price.

It's quite interesting, the new engine is a miss mash of 172 - 182 and 197.

Remember the engine is essentially the same between all but the newest turbo RS :)

Wow that's impressive.

Good to know that's an option.

Would you mind telling me how it set you back please? PM me if you wish :) Thanks.

So are you all up and running now with the new engine? RS2 fitted and mapped or what not?

What 197 bit does it have?

The cam cover appears to be a 197, the strainer plate is 182 there are some machine marks on the head that apparently are only on 197. TBH the only thing I noted was the cam cover and strainer, James filled me in on the other bits.

Don't really want to say the price, suffice to say it was more than most would value their clio at, but it went well with the new gearbox I had fitted a year or two back.

Car has always run with RS2 even on the old engine and been mapped appropriately, still running this one in before it's back to be checked for fuelling.

Great thread as I maybe facing a similar dilemma. IIRC a chap at Oulton bought a new engine for his cup for around 2k. . I'm sure Adam could shed some light. Shame you won't share the info :(

What's wrong with your engine?

It'll be readily available if you ask Renault :)

Nothing seems wrong but I've been advised to check before doing belts and dephaser. . I've asked Adam ;)

IIRC its a little more than 2K, and then VAT on top.

When you price up all the bits though, like a few hundred quid for new lifters, a couple hundred for new rockers etc, not to mention all the gaskets and seals that also add up, and I dont actually think they are terrible value.

Just shy of £2900 Inc vat

Yeah that sounds about right.

If you price the individual parts, its actually quite a bargain TBH, but ONLY if you are happy with a standard spec engine, if you are about to start pulling it apart and uprating it then its far less useful.

When you weigh it against a new car it sounds great but against a 10 year old car that's worth half that it's not so good.

If you are like you and only keep a car for five minutes then its a bit of a waste having a new engine.

But -J- has a car he absolutely loves and has no intention of getting rid of for years and years, and is in pretty much as new condition anyway, so in that context it makes perfect sense as that money gets him another 10 years 150000 miles of trouble free motoring from the the engine itself hopefully.

It only stops making sense if you sell up or crash it!
