They have a charcoal cannister that makes a tapping sound buts that should only be on tickover when engine is warm!

Yeh mine did that so had its engine replaced, started doing it again so time for another engine... these RS's are great

I did a recent oil change, i use BP Ultimate

... but i do get that tapping on tick over... Whats the charcoal cannister ?!?! Can i stop it?!?!

isnt it in one of the wings separate from the engine?.. if you listen to the engine bay you can tell if its THE ENGINE or THE CCANISTER

Mines the same, I'm always listening to it at the lights etc with the window down. Sad!! I've had it for 1 year now and it has always sounded like this. After I got decent oil put in it it sounded better for a while but soon returned to the way it used to sound. The wierd thing is a lot of the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the engine itself it sounds more like it is from underneath. I thought it was the centre section of the exhaust as a baffle had come loose had it replaced it seemed better for a while but now is the same as it was. Fook knows maybe they are just meant to sound like this :(

If you get the tapping noise from cold then it should not be the charcoal cannister, make sure your oil level is ok, you may well have a dry tappet, from cold can take a while to build up with oil pressure then it will be quieter, check from cold check your oil level......

Sounds like the charcoal cannister mate! it normally comes when engine is warm and has been idleing for a minute! its on the offside front under the headlight, best thing to do is to have a 182 one fitted cos they are made of plastic and not metal like the 172's so its a lot quieter. ;)

My 182 rattled it nuts off with 9 miles on the clock. The sales man said it was a high rev engine so they sound like that.

It will be a fucked hydraulic tappet - these things should compress in a vice and spring back out easily. If they dont they can cause this problem. From cold they will rattle a bit until there full of oil. Get it checked out as it may be something less obvious.

charcoal cannister, 44 quid new, piece of piss to fit, mine was tappy as hell, all sorted now :)

I believe the cannister is down by the bumper on the drivers side.

Can probably get to it by removing the wheel and taking off the mudshield

whip off the drivers wheel, take out drivers arch lining, look up towards the chassis leg, (its the black box)think there is one or two vac hoses connected, remove, then there is a multiplug (located behing the drivers headlight, top of the cannister) dissconnect this. Think from memory its two 13mm bolts.

pretty easy really. Mine was hooped, very cliicky/tappy and full of water for some reason?!

Two hoses (one to the intake manifold and one to the fuel tank) and yep two bolts.

Water gets in under there hence why your is wet.

If you want take your front wing off see the mud which gets under there.
