Engine Swap on 16v!!

Should i change my engine? Have got the chance of a 46k 16v engine and gearbox for £450!!

Mine is on 125k with a gearbox rebuild by renault at 36k!

Cambelt needs doing on my current engine!! Gonna cost me £210!

How much am i looking at to get the new engine & box fitted?

Is anyone gonna offer to help me do it for some of my hard earned cash?

Will i get better money when i sell my car to get a willy?

Who do i have to inform and will my insurance go up at all?

Does it sound like a good move for £450 notes?

buy the engine but keep your existing one in for the time being. over winter strip the new one and tune it. it will be ready for next season plus it will give you something to do over winter.

its mint part from a bit of rust on the back arch & bottom of passenger door but am gonna get it sorted eventually

If I keep my engine what could I do to make it a good un?

even with 125k on the clock if its running fine then why change it

even if you do buy this new engine it would be worth doing a cam belt change while its out

or tune it

Im only thinking bout changing as it needs the cam belt doing!! Its gonna cost me £210!

And i thought for the extra £100 i will get a car with 1/3 the milage and will get better returns when i sell it!!

Plus what i get for my engine when i sell it!!

Just trying to figure it out if its financially a good idea to have a car with 46k and a new cambelt (cause i will change that for £30 as its outta the shell) or a car with 125k and a new cambelt!! The difference is gonna cost me £90 till i sell my old engine!! and any more then £90 for my old engine is a bonus or i will keep it till i can afford to get the spare head worked on and i wont be without a car and will also have bagfuls of spares for my car should anything go wrong!!

Trouble is now Rockports engine has come into the equation!!

Grrrrrrrrr im pulling my hair out as i need to make a decision before Thursday!!

The car was a write off mate!! He bought the hole thing back off the insurance company and has stripped it!!

If i bought Rockports i could get some cams fitted and a chip!! and maybe some pulleys!!

Where bouts are ya weight? I have access to ramps the lot any day of the week! Work have a car club that has almost every tool you would want and 2 hydraulic lifts It only costs £15 a year!!

Smokey. Im doing exactly the same thing next week. (swapping 16v lumps that is). Bought this 16v nearly a year ago with mind of doing this after rolling and writing my first (doh!). Present car as now done 135,000 miles and wants clutch, cambelt, aux belt as well as other things. So doing all this to engine saved from previous wreck (85,000 miles). And hay presto, car loses 50,000 miles and ive still got an engine to sell.

Yeah Paul my car would lose 85k if i did the change!! Trouble is trying to get the dials to go with it! How many peeps are gonna believe that its a 46k when i decide to sell it as my history tells them its done over 100k!!

as long as u keep both set of clocks and record when the change happened it wont bother people. Just dont try to tell them the cars done 46k. Be honest!

No , i wasnt on about lying!! My car at the moment has reno history up to about 100k with all old mots and tax discs so i wouldnt wanna lie as every MOT has the milage on!

The guy with the 46k engine aint got the dials nor has Rockport i dont think!! I dont wanna see 125k+ when i look down i wanna see 46k lol

Think i am gonna go for Rockports engine and leave it out to get cams, headwork, followers etc done head gasket etc!! Are these things me and the trusty old Haynes manual (Oh yeah and you lot) can do?? While the engines out i mean!!Obviosly not the heedwork!!

But your thinking along the right lines Smokey, i only went for the williams convertion becuase



a. Cambelt change & service was costing me £380 (renault wanted £500 or something silly)

b. Even tho the 72k miles on my engine are all motorway miles, the clutch has gotta be chnaged at some time, thats another big £££ job, again £500 from renault.

c. i would have made a few hundred notes for my lump

so it made the williams convertion (£1150) inc fitting and engine all worth it. Even tho im still waiting to collect my car

I do but its up the other side of Manchester and its £300, and will probably cost me another £75 getting it back as well as hiring a trailer for the day at £30!

Plus whatever one i get is going to have a full rebuild with bearings, piston rings, all gaskets etc etc so may as well get one that has got a few more miles on the clock and spend less on the actual engine! Just wish i could take mine off the road for a cpl of months and just do the work on that one!!

Thats the thing weight! I want a project to work on!! Am gonna get the head worked on, cams, pulleys, new clutch fitted, etc so want one i can pull apart then put back together again (hopefully anyway)!!

Will also help me when anything goes wrong when it is back in, as i wont be scared to work on it if i have some practise!! A budding mechanic in the making me! lol

Would love your expertise when i do get one eventually thou fella!!
