i would like to swop my f4r 738 engine in my 182 for a 1.5 dci of some description does anyone know if this is possible/ economically viable? and what modifications would need doing

Yes it is possible but it will need alot of work, not sure wether the running gear from a 182 will work on a 1.5dci tho,

Can i ask why you are thinking ov doing it? could be easier to sell the 182 and buy a 1.5dci

ill quite happily put a 2.0 16v in a non RS car for someone if they wanted me to but convert something to a dci, thats asking for trouble i wouldnt touch it!

That makes no sense whatsoever. Even with that badly thought out explanation.

You owe £7,000 on a car that costs on average 13.6p per mile
You want to spend £3,000 to convert it to a car that costs 9.4p per mile
You would have to to 66,600 miles to break even!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but you want to put yourself £3,000 further in debt?

I'm also betting that the finance agreement wouldn't allow you to do that...

38.5 mpg was what I used.

33mpg is about 15.8p per mile (at 115p/l)- in which case you would still have to do 47000 miles to break even. Pointless, it really is.

oh dear. can you not afford to run the 182 at all then?? doing an engine conversion to save money is not possible imo, its just rediculous! you would have to spend a lot of money converting it and running it wou't be that much cheaper tbh. you would be better off catching the bus more often, cycling etc. or changing your wheels to 15" and running budget tyres, and just being very concious of fuel/how you drive. besides you cant go and ruin a 182 with a dci engine!! could the finance review the plan and make the payments lees for a longer period of time?
should have tought much harder about the commitments of finance tbh, unless you have been hit by the credit crunch and lost your job etc... then i do feel sorry for you.

You can, but go careful. Some finance companies can mark it against you, meaning you may struggle to get finance on a packet of Crisps in the future.

Daniel speaks sense. What ever you do dont give it back to pay your loan or as said it will be marked against you.
Its just a bit of expensive lesson to learn.

dont think this has been mentioned yet but what about resale prices the value of your 182 will plumet to that of a dci replica . you will really struggle to sell the 182 afterwards i would imagine .

Good point. I think it could theoretically be classed as 'defaulting' on the loan, as the company will not have received all money owed.

Might be marked as partial settlement, however, they may allow the remainder of the loan to continue without any security (doubtfull???).

I have no real idea about car finance, just thinking out loud really, never had any car finance and my background is in mortgages.

Could the car even be traded in? Would be best to read the finance documents. Sounds like a high APR to have 7k owed on a car valued at 5k.

The other thing to consider is the amount the finance company will be able to get for the car. Do they sell them at auctions? Surely that would make it less than £5k?

Thanks, I wasn't sure. My m8 was asking about this the other night but I said I didn't know.

He has a hire purchase agreement on his Vectra and wants to sell it to get two smaller cars but wasn't sure about selling it on.

Is selling it on just as easy as trading it in? If the security for the loan is on the car then would the finance company go to the new owner for the car if they didn't get their money?

The car goes back to a dealer. (Any dealer that offers finance)

The dealer then settles the loan.

A new agreement is then drawn up with the new car.

I'm so s**t at explaining stuff on a computer....

Lets say I have a Car worth £5,000 but I owe £4500 on finance and want to sell it and buy two cheaper cars instead.

I take my car along to dealer. He offers me £5,000 as a part exchange against two of his cars priced at £2500 each.

I then tell him its on HP and I need finance for the other two.

I The dealer then pays off my finance, and takes my car off me leaving them with £500 of my money (£5k less £4500)

That means the two cheaper cars I want to buy are £5000 together, less the £500 equity I had in the part exchange. Meaning I'm now driving two cheaper cars for the same price as my one car.

I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense. You wouldn't believe i did car finance for 7 years would you! lol.
