Engine warning light

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
My 182 engine warning light has appeared (seriously, driven this car about 6 times and had a problem each time!) on the bottom right hand side of the dash.

What type of fault is this as i know there is the other engine warning light which has "STOP" in the middle? Im not asking what the specific problem is e.g. o2 sensor etc just the type of warning.

Sorry if that doesnt make sense, hope it does to somebody.

Also, where was the thread Edde made with the self diagnostic thing you can try?

Also if its any help, i started the car this morning, moved by brothers car whilst mine was running, got into the car again and the warning light had appeared.

Ok, got home to discover its the exhaust gas monitor warning light. Now the car passed its MOT emmisions but only just, and with this warning light coming on id like to take an educated guess that its a lambda sensor.

How many lambdas are on the clio? 2 i assume?

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
I did that when coming home, had a "t--" thing come up, cleared it, ragged it about a bit, checked again, fine. :D

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
Yeah gonna nip to a peugeout/citroen specialist i usually go to today to get the fault code.

£10 says its a lambda.

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
It was the pre cat lambda. You all owe me £10. :D

Now im debating whether or not to replace this straight away or just before the MOT in July, as i dont want to risk knackering up another one just before its MOT.

My only concern is that if the car is running rich will this affect the carbon buildup and not be so healthy for the engine? On the contrary if its running lean might this cause piston wear?

Im thinking of keeping an eye on the mpg, if it starts getting rough figures swap the lambda over otherwise wait it out until July and get a new one then?

Get it changed now. They do just wear its life.

Engine running rich or lean ins't a huge issue at this level.

My light came on when I bought picked my car up on August - it went out after a day and all has been fine since then.

Then yesterday the emissions sensor orange light again came on and is still on..

Do I get the sensot swapped to sort the problem?
If I leave it, what will the implications be?

Otherwise, the car is driving as normal.

you need to get the car plugged into a computer see what the exact fault code is.

I have done the self diagnosis thing and all was well. I must admit the MPG is not as high as normal (34.5 average). I dont have to take this to Renault do I?

That self diagnostis does nothing its only point is to prove all the lights work and the dials go though there correct banding the codes it throws are pointless and show nothing.

A good garage might have a decient enough setup but renault clip is the bet and not many none dealerships hold it.

I just get nervous as when I called Renault about it before they said the car prob needed a new set of coils at £300+ - this was without even seeing the car!!!

My emissions light was on for well over a year and it passed two MOTs so wasn't the lambda sensor.

Got the light cleared at Rentech and it's been off for a while now, car still runs great.

£20, get the fault code, post it. Dont go to Renault.

Under what assumptionm or knowledge is that comming form?

Renault wont guarantee to solve the problem, just try to find it. Id sooner get the fault code from a back street garage like i did "o2 sensor pre cat" than pay £80+ for Renault to give me the same answer. Obviously if you get nothing from it and you still cant pin point the problem, go to the dealership as a last resort.

Dan, Renault charge £30 for a diagnostic check. It's around that anyway, certainly not £80.

I think the issue is that some garage's general plugin fault checkers show the wrong error. When I had mine in at a VW garage they were telling me all sorts of crazy stuff, such as I had a faulty brake light... Ok then.

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
£30? I take back what i said if its that. Your brake light probably was faulty Jeff, you just never use it to notice. :p
