  clio rsi 1.8 16v
After spending £300 yes £300 on fitting a new alternator on my car on monday, i was driving my car out of a petrol station last night when i hurt a SNAP noise, then i realised i could not get it into gear without forcing it and it sounded like when u try and put it in gear without pressing the clutch down BUT the clutch cable was still pressing down like usual... anyway i managed to drive home 20 mins... then in the morning my car wouldnt even start...

I took it to the garage today and they said well first thing is the bat is flat... so i said erm no... no it isnt... went home got another bat put it on... bonnet was open when i turned ignition and i noticed smoke coming from under the engine, does anyone know wtf has happened??

Its a 1.8 16 v clio

so the engine runs as normal?

Think this is that retaining clip in the gearbox. Speak to Matteh

see if you problem is the same as the one he just had on his 172 valver (think he is running a valver gearbox)

Im not sure - it wouldnt turn on... it just made a tick noise once everytime i tried to start it... i dont know if they wired up the starter motor wrong when they put new alternator in or anything.. im really pissed off i want to know why this s**t always happens to me :/

Well if it just clicks when you turn the key it means either two things, your batteries dead or you starter is still shagged, mine went last week and did the same just clicked, re-con starter 30 quid no probs, if it is just your battery get a multi meter and chek the volts or see how the electrics work in the car, sounds like starter solenoid tho mate!!

If the solenoid isnt broken and the motor is just getting a bit weak, you will have killed it i would imagine.
If you hold the key when the engine is trying to start but not turning over, the motor axle stays still and burns itself out.

Could well be the solenoid though.
Have a look at the wires. I've seen a car have a twiddle and start before now.
