erratic revs and now car won't start. help!!

yesterday my car broke down after the revs began to become erratic, one minute it was running fine then the revs started dropping then coming back up again. this happened for a couple of minutes, then the car just died.

my guess is either there is no fuel or no spark to ignite it, other than that i'm at a loss. has anyone any experience of this or any idea of what the cause/solution might be?

coil pack.
also your lambda could be a little at fault (erratic revs), but won't cause car to not start. How bad is your MPG?
