et 42 any good (ofset)

  2015 ST2(MO)/CorsaLE
what is the difference i really dont understand this offset i guess some stick out more??

Lower the offset, further they stick out. And I think cup offset is actually 38.5...

Edit: it's ET45 :) was thinking of the 172 Cup wheels!

Going from et45 to et42 will mean it sticks out 3mm further.

Going from et45 to et38 will mean it sticks out 7mm further... U get the idea.

You also need to take into account the width of the new wheel as well, as if its wider, it will sit out more than just 3mm

Hmmm.. I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure, Offset controls the face of the wheels (how far it sticks out exterior wise). The width goes inwords, closer to the car and can result in catching the inside of the arch if too wide or wrong offset. Might be wrong but pretty sure that's correct. The Width shouldn't effect the offset size as that wouldn't make sense if you get me?

Offest "conrols" the mounting face on the wheel to the hub face only. the bigger the number = more inwards (always a minus number on our cars)

yes the other aspects you mention are correct when differing offset.

I think you may be incorrect about width not being a factor.

In fact yeah, here are some calculations from another site:

There's more fitment than just offset... If you're running(for example) a 6.5" wide rim with ET 40, it will not clear the same as a 8" wide rim with ET 40..

ET is a hard measurement, not a %age.

For example, how much wheel will overhang towards the body from the mating surface:

6.5"/2 = 3.25" + 1.6"(roughly 40mm) = 4.85"

8"/2 = 4" + 1.6" = 5.6"

and for the section of wheel outwards of the mating surface:

6.5"/2 = 3.25" - 1.6" = 1.65"

8"/2 = 4" - 1.6" = 2.4"

In both cases you have an ET 40 wheel, but the 8" rim will be MUCH closer to the suspension components and body, and it will also poke out more. Just because the offset is the same, doesn't guarantee anything when going wider.

There is a website somewhere with a calculator that shows you all the figures.
