Evening Photo shoot (and a new toy!)

This evening I met up with Mark (M4rkie23) to shoot his 172 again, as he's made a few changes, and I wanted to get some more rig shots in some newly discovered locations.

But mainly it was to play with my new toy, a Nikon D3 camera :)

HOWEVER, due to a c**k up with the delivery people, I only got the camera at midday, so I didnt have time to charge the batteries for a shoot, the battery had 3% charge, so I brought it with me to see if I could use it anyway.

All the rig shots are taken with my trusty D200 btw :)

Which do you prefer?

The light was fading quick when we did these shots, so that's why they have an 'odd' look to them. Which version do you prefer?

This was the only shot I got with the D3, this is pretty much straight out of the camera. It's not my best ever, we didnt have much time to set up as the light was fading and we wanted to do some more rig shots in another location.

I will be giving the new camera a good workout tomorrow if the weather behaves :)

As always, C+C is welcome :)

7 is my fave but they are all amazing as normal. I really want you to take some of mine and some other EA motors :)

I think they're possibly the best I've seen yet Dan, honestly they're mint. #'s 1, 3, 4 and 6 are my favourites of the panning shots. #1 over 2 for the angle, #6 over 5 for less distortion. Can't wait to see the shots when you get out with the new camera. :)

Well I think I deserve it now, I really want to take my photography to the 'next level', and the D3 will make things a bit easier I feel.

Don't blame you mate, your photography is awesome anyway, it can only get better with a better camera. I so wish I could afford a new camera, the D40 is like a first car. OK for a couple of years, but it's limited and you want something better.

Fantastic mate!

If i were top buy a 172 i would hunt down a minter of a Monico for sure!

I know how you feel. A Nikon D70s was my first SLR camera, it was amazing. But, as new cameras come out, you realise how even minor upgrades really would help. One example is the D70s had a tiny (but very good) LCD screen on the rear, the D3 has a 3" screen. It's soooo much better for reviewing photos.

The main reason I upgraded is because of the D3's ISO performance. Compared to my D200, it is phenomenal! I NEVER increase the ISO on my D200 because the photos look horrid. I took a few shots earlier at ISO1600 - there's barely any noise at all in comparison.

This will help LOADS at weddings etc, where before I wouldnt know what to do in poor lighting :)

Brilliant photos!

Dan, would you mind posting a picture of the rig you use? I've never seen one before and would be really interested to see how they work?

That's really good. I get noise at ISO 200 on the D40 lol, tiny screen & no live view sucks, plus the lack of AF in body too. Ah well, I'll probably still have it in another 3 years lol.

There's some photos on blog (link on my website :))

Mark also took quite a lot of photos, and some video too!

Depending on how they came out I'll post them up :)

Don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading though. There are people who will buy the lastest gear thinking it will make them better. Its rubbish - it's the person behind the camera that makes a shot, not the camera.

But that's not to say the newer gear makes getting 'that shot' much easier.

Trust me when I say that getting the D3 was a long decision, as you would expect for the price. I'm in quite a fortunate position where I still live with my rents, and Im on not a bad wage. So I took advantage and got this when I could.
This D3 should last me a long time now......

WOW!!!!! Fantastic shots dan. Couldn't thank you enough!

To anyone who gets the opportunity to work with dan, he is one of the nicest most outgoing people I've ever met. He has excellent equipment, even better expertise and works reali hard. I genuinely couldn't be happier and hope more of you are lucky enough to work with him in the future.

Thanks again mate!

Great shots Dan,

Have you played with a D700? If you have, how do you rate it compared to the D3? I have a D700 to play with for a week or so but unsure if the extra cash for the D3 is just for the grip or the extra memory card slot or something silly I wouldnt use? Or is there a big difference in quality?
Oh and Ive only had the D700 for a day and I love it so far! Compared to my D200 anyway.

I have had a play with the D700 before, we actually use them at work so I've borrowed some before.

One of the reasons I didnt go for a D700 is because I can't stand using the 'smaller style' cameras. I would have to get the battery grip and extra battery, which would eat into the cost difference a bit.
Also, the D3 has higher fps shooting, which would be useful to me as I do motorsport photography quite a bit too.

But as far as image quality, I think you would be hard pushed to tell the D700 and D3 apart, at least that's what I've been reading on the reviews of each camera.

Actual WOW!! just seen the pics on a "big screen" (not the iPhone)

What can i say!

Heres a pic I feel the need to put up. I dont know what the chances are of taking a photo on a phone (with a focus delay), not knowing when dan is going to take a photo, and capturing a flash (which must be a fraction of a second)???

1 and 5 work best fella.
Top angle shots don't work for me, car just has no impact compared to eye level lower ones. Nice locations too, windy road looks good.
Good photos once again.
