right i have gone to bolt a phase 2 system onto my phase 1 172 and the centre section seems to be about 2 inches to short the backbox fits fine it just wont meet up to the cat. am i right in thinking i need a pahse 2 cat?

Yes you will, the ph1s had shorter cats so the center section was longer by about an inch and a half. You'll need the longer center section or a ph2 cat, if its a early ph1 you'll also need something to plug the 2nd lambda sensor hole.
