exhaust problems

Seem to be having trouble with the clamp on the exhaust after the cat. When i bought the car the exhaust was blowing from that clamp and took it for its stainless. The guy told me the gasket was knackered so he replaced it and all was well.

Cars been in about 4-5 times because the exhaust keeps dropping and now all the mounts have been changed. But it was blowing again at that clamp so he put a bit of sealer on it.

After driving quickly a few days later theres a really bad blow in the same place on the same gasket. Is there anyway to stop it happening? its gonna end up going every 2 weeks or something crazy

its not the cat its self thats the problem though its the clamp round about the middle of the system thats the problem?

Back of the cat should be a bolted flange on a 172 not a clamp? 182s are clamped and its shite with a capital S.

Might be a stainless exhaust with a telescopic piece? (Magnex - Ktec etc) These require clamped just after the bolted flange

its standard i only had the rear section of the system replaced.

I think it may be the flange your talking about its sorta weird shaped? guess whos not a mechanic lol but apparently theres a gasket in it and mine is blowing once again

Yes with fred here, doesn't sound like a standard setup. I had the exhaust off my 172 several times adjusting it (magnex owners will know!) and I never changed the cat->exhaust gasket and it never blew out the cat joint ever.

it might not be standard but i only had the rear section replaced since ive owned it with a custom stainless one,

Ah you must mean the spring kit part, manifold to cat.

On a stock system it should last at least a couple of years before blowing so my guess is someones not tightend it up right or bodged fitted it lazily.

looks as thought you've a stainless cat-back system fitted. that flange is just as it is on the OE system though. you could try sealing it with Loctite 5920 (Halfords) which is a copper based silicone sealant.

if that doesn't help, i reckon you've got some sort of problem with the cat itself. mine also sounds as though it's blowing; gaskets/joints have been renewed and sealed repeatedly and it still sounds as though it's blowing. i've a decat pipe on the way which i hope'll solve the problem and allow me to have a good look at the cat whilst it's off

undo it, clean both flanges so smooth flat surface, no rust etc, bit of exhaust paste and bob should be your uncle

it is a stainless cat back this is gonna sound daft but what is the 2 boxes for

two silencers? just for noise - more silencers = quieter

i'd get some new bolts on there for a start. split the join, clean it all up with a wire brush, then use some silicon (much better on exhausts than exhaust paste) and with the new bolts get it done up nice and tight. Worn hangers will not be helping as the exhaust swinging about will loosen up the joins pretty quickly
