Exhaust rattle....

  E36 M3. 182
Hi, i had my whole exhaust system replaced a few months ago, as the rear section failed and the movement must have broke the manifold, however, when the exhaust centre fitted it, the mounts were shagged. I fitted a rear mount myself and noticed that the centre mount had failed and was being held on with 2 tywraps, so i got a new one and fitted it.
Since then the exhaust rattles like mad when i come off the throttle and is loud as hell when coming down through 3k rpm.
This leads me to two possible conclusions:-
a) my exhaust is not the correct one, the centre box is too big and hitting the heatshield and resonating excessively.
or.. b) my engine mounts are shagged and let the engine tilt forward at the top/ back at the bottom, thus pushing the whole system up against the body of the car, causing a rattle by allowing excessive movement of the engine. does anyone have any experiene of such problems???????? cheers :)

Well i'd say it was either the incorrect exhaust or it has been fitted badly. I went through 3 rear sections failing on mine before I thought, "sod this" and got a full Magnex system, although I still get the odd rattle it sounds and looks a darn sight better than a standard pipe, and has better gas flow.

hmm... took a look at it and the centre box has no clearance off the heatshield!!!!! and the the hanger on the front mount ( the rubber lined bolt on casting) is forced right against the top, sat right against the upper edge of the hole, somethings amiss, because all the mounts are new, and so is the exhaust !!!!!!!

Maybe it just needs resettling to get it away from the heatshield ?

Mine did this so i just lossened the centre section and tighened again making sure it was far enough away from the heatsheild.

hmm, might be an idea. is it necessary to put shedloads of exhaust paste round the rear join?? and if if was a misalignment, it would have to be the manifold to cat/downpipe join (flat triangular flange) or the clamp join to the rear of the centre box, i mught just pull the lot out and re fit it myself, what a pain!!!!!!!
