Extra bit on accelerator?

it's a safety measure to overide the speed limiter. in case you need the power in an emergency, pulling out on a motorway etc.

all Mk2 Ph2 onwards have it, even if ESP/TC isn't present.

So the questions I still have are;

Why does it operate infrequently when under 'normal' driving? ie why does the car let you access it at other times and not others?

With reference to above, why is it only when the engine is at high rev's? If the unit was faulty it would happen indescriminately. I found that you can't always manipulate the switch to 'click'?

This is how (in the 182 i tried) the button seemed to work (as in the button itself, not it's effect on the car).

No speed limiter (or cruise control ) engaged, the button semed to click on giving it the boot on some occasions and not at others, and this seemed to be governed by nothing than how many revs were already on the dial. We tried mashing the pedal at low revs but couldn't illicit the 'click', with the engine at 5k ish the click let itself happen. Always were were confused as to what the actual effect on the car had been?

The reason I've been so persistant for an answer to this is because this perticular trait wouldn't seem to have any relevance to the function I'm now stand advised it controls:clown: .

I know some of the replies are stating that the click is always there, but on Darren S's car it seems not to be; if it's a fault in the unit I wouldn't expect it to consistanly act in that same fasion, either it would be there or not?

Given what the unit does, is this trait of greater concern?

If you read the whole thread you'll see I've already been suitably corrected on the matter.

As for correcting my spelling, I've been working since 6am, following a great night's sleep facilitated by my 8 week old daughter, so I think you can forgive the odd typo. Loving your command of capital letters by the way .

Maybe when you 'mashed' the throttle sometimes, trying to feel the 'click', you went straight through it and clicked the switch without you realising/feeling!

Next time try applying the throttle slowly/smoothly until you feel resistance, then apply more pressure to feel the click.... try this a what ever revs you want, IT WILL ALWAYS BE THERE! lol

Look guys I'd just like to say I think we've been at slight cross purposes here. Sure I didn't get the subtleties of a speed limiter, at least in part because I'd never really considered it; I wouldn't use that even if i had it.

So sorry for causing a big debate, and sorry to the thread-starter for hijacking, but it wasn't just about that one thing, or at least I didn't think it was.

As for those who saw fit to put me in my place without anything constructive to say, well, thanks, you really helped straighten me out.

Tbh, I've never used the speed limiter in the three years I've had the car. Sometimes the cruise control - like on the trip down to RenTech and never the climate control. Car toys do nothing for me...

Going off the responses here, I'm struggling to understand the 'benefit' of a speed limiter if cruise control is also fitted? Surely, in Mark's example of the truck bearing down on you at 56mph - I'd want the override to kick in immediately - regardless of whether I pressed the accelerator 1/4, 1/2 or all the way down? CC does this anyway - so why should SL require a foot-through-the-bulkhead push to disable it? I agree, it sounds a little dangerous and a little unnerving if I was ever in a similar situation. Hence it will remain unused after my test.

The speed limiter is for if you are going through those crappy average speed things. The cruise control switches off if you dip the clutch or touch the brakes, but the speed limiter stays on. It allows you to go up and down through the gears, but as soon as you hit the limiter speed, it won't accelerate any more.
I find it ace for the M42 with the variable speed limit things.

I dont get the override thing if i had cruise control and wanted to cancel it id hit the brake not slam the accelerator.

Also the click thing does still work when car is fully switched off.

because its just a switch which renault decided to leave there regardless if the car had cruise/speed limiter or not (to cut design costs). If you dont have CC/SL, the switch simply isn't connected to anything!!

again... its just a switch! Just like you would still be able to operate your light switch in the lounge if you had a complete power cut - it just wouldn't do anything.... just like the pedal switch does nothing!!

lol welcome!! the speed limiter is pretty pointless IMO (designed for women and old people i think! lol)... cruise control though is great!! use it all the time
