F1 is amazing.....

LOL @ the hate.

F1's always been about innovation. Turbo-era cars sounded epic, so hopefully they'll sort it out.

That said, you can't beat the sound of this. Ever.

2.0 Turbo diesel F1 cars by 2020... You heard it here first ;)

Seriously though, I think it will be just as good as it is today.

I think this is a great idea.
F1 is all about innovation and this gives the engineers a new area to exploit.
Also, smaller, lighter engines means lower centre of gravity making the cars even more agile and perhaps a little less wing to help with close cornering.
If they are restricted to 600bhp, that could be low enough to enable them to use variomatic gearboxes. I think Ferrari dabbled with them a few years ago.

I'm looking forward to it.
I wonder if they'll be allowed to have them on crazy boost for qualifying.

It is amazing how they get the power out of such a small engine. Internals must have to be made of diamond.

nowhere is safe from pitiful downsizing.

thanks for that Alesi F1 tho Chris, that's gring straight on the revs/cylinders appreciation thread

The BMW engines were made from old road car blocks that had already been used for 100,000k!

That's all to do with stresses caused by heat cycles. In simplified terms, a brand new block could move around too much and put itself out of tolerance (and possibly fail) much easier than a block that's been through the heat cycles, re machined and built up.

  2.2 bar shed.
600bhp out of a 1.6 isnt a huge deal... I dont see what the massive surprise is? People are getting 1100+hp from 2.0 Turbo's nowadays... I mean, ffs the F22 can make that kinda power on standard internals.

2.0 4 pot = boring, end of.

I suppose, but when you consider the amount/duration of stress on them it's a bit different. 1000bhp skylines don't run flat out for ~250 laps in a weekend. Not to mention the stresses of the traction through the transmission when it puts the power down.

No big deal with the whole power, but as the saying goes....theres no replacement for displacement. Id like to see how slow these look round a track in comparason with V10's and 12's etc. Just like the F1 owner said, no one wants it. Im beginning to think were running out of oil now....

THIS

I wouldn't mind the drop to 1.6's, providing they left cylinder counts free, at least then we could have some 6 cylinder machines still out there, they'd only be held back by the fuel allocation.

ideally though, 3.5 litres, cylinders free is the best way

4 pot = boring, end of.

it's true they don't look as quick. Not as much grunt as a big engined NA. It's a shame, but as least they aren't going Diesel.lol. Saying that, there is a long time between now and then, and knowing F1, i'll be amazed if it will still be the case.

I wont. F1 always has been about the pinacle of development. F1 technology filters down into road. Look at the cars we got in the 80's and 90's as a result of F1. Wasnt the Renault 5 somehting to do with the turbo era? and the Mclarren F1. We will get economical cars with power. Look at VW's 1.4 TSI unit, 180 bhp isnt bad and its got the economy to go with it. Not that i like it. Id sooner have the 2.5 inline 5 Volvo engine in the FRS thanks. Im surprised that hasnt been dogged by EU either. Im slowly waiting for EU to rape Porsche's 3.8 flat six. :(

Very true, most things tend to filter down from f1 in the car world. Just seen the post about the M3 going smaller and turbo'd for 2012. EU regs spoil everything. Don't get me started on the whole "Global Warming" s**t.

  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
Yes the EU regs are starting to strangle the life out of large displacement engines in road cars but what you lot seem to lose sight of in your power hungry red mist is that if performance cars are displacement ergo emissions limited then they will inevitably become lighter to counter this.

Who cares if the engines are boring? If the car is still quick then who are we to complain?

  Golf GTD Mk7
I mentioned about the weight a bit further up, not sure what the weight will be changed to. Now its moved to 620kg ish. I'm sure the engine will make more weight loss, but lightening the rear end will make it harder to get the power down no?
It's not that they'll be boring, and they will be quick, but it's just a same that the big lumps are going.

  top of the pyramid

I'll be a good thing bringing the turbo back to f1 they just need to bin all the computers as-well.

^^^ I actually think Silverstone was a better track back in those days. Granted it's not bad now, but was a much more flowing track in the old days. Too much slow sections now, most likely due to H&S and "overtaking zones"

Engine looks like a V4?

  Golf GTD Mk7
Why would they make them a V4?

Dunno really, why a v6 and not a straight six :S I'm not engineer minded, but does the piston configuration not make a difference to power delievery (can't imagine it would but you never know :)) Or is it just for space reasons? In which case it might affect weight distribution etc.
