Fan belt change

  1.2 1996 RL Prima
I have a high pitched squealing from when I start my car and persisting until I reach about 30-40 mph. The noise is especially bad when it is cold/wet. I think it is most probably my fan belt. I would like to have a go at changing this as I know it is only a five min job and am low on cash. :)

Can anyone tell me where my fan belt and altenator is located and how can i tighten/change the belt? A detailed explanation would be helpful. I have a 1.2 1996 RL Prima

Your fan belt is underneth the drivers side engine mount, going round the crank and then the altenator at the back, the altenator is on the bulk head side of the engine, if you look under the mount you should see the belt and where it runs.
To change or tighten it, open the top bolt on the altenator, can be reached from the top, the bottom bolt is moast easyly reached from the drivers side wheel arch. Take the plastic covers and stuff off and you should see the belt and the altenator. Then open the bottom bolt, the altenator should now move freely. Move the altenator forward and the belt should come off. To fit another belt, move the altenator forward and slip the new belt on. Hold the altenator back towards the bulk head to tension, but it only needs to be tensioned so theres a little play left itn the belt. If you tighten it to mutch ull end up doing all this again! Then tighten the top bolt up when the belts at the right tension i keep it there, and afterwords tighten te bottom bolt. Just remember to check that the bolts are correctly tightend before doing anything els and then you should be fine.
Just hope you fan belt is better than mine and you dont end up changeing one on the side of the road at 3am in the middle of north wales!!!
