FAO All Ph1 172 Owners -Throttle

Just a little note here for the ph1 172 owners on here...

Ever since owning my car, it's had quite a stiff throttle pedal, I assumed this was just due to it being cable and not electric like the ph2... this weekend my cable frayed, and with this the pedal got VERY notchy, so it had to be replaced.

I bought myself a brand new cable from Renault, about £35, and fitted it today.

What a difference it has made, the pedal still feels VERY direct, but is so much smoother and easier to move. I always assumed my throttle body wasn't as clean as it could be, but the car now feels amazing, honestly like a brand new car (coupled with my new clutch).

So, if your throttle is a bit stiff, treat yourself to a new cable, most are 10 years old now.

I did this a few weeks back to stop the sticking!
Mine had frayed at the end and was causing the throttle cable to stick.

Makes the car feel 10x better!

Started sticking again now though, and it isn't the throttle body :(

I found that where the rubber sheath meets the plastic on the throttle body end, the sheath is able to move away, exposing the metal cable housing.

To stop any dirt/grit getting in there, I use insulating tape to keep them together.

Also when you fit it, make sure you get it at the right angle where it leaves the engine bay and enters the interior - some of the ones iv fitted the main reason was the cable had come unclipped and swisted itself into a right funny angle - it should be curved as smoothly as possible to avoid kinking.

Agree with the cable change, I went through 3 in 50,000 miles as I could feel it stiffen up.

Renault yes.

And no guys, they're not that bad to fit.

There's a couple of awkward clips behind the heatproofing at the back of the bay, but you can get pretty good access to where it enters the car through the drivers arch.

No and no never. It has to be a Renault part.

is it best to go for a genuine Renault one or would a 'First Line' one be ok? as it only £15.50

You get itchy forearms fitting these when fiddling behind the heatproofing mat.

I took the first line cable back I brought and am going to order from Renault tomorrow.. Had a look hopefully should be able to do it.. I take it the cable goes behind the sound proofing all the way along?

Changed mine today after the original cable decided to jam my throttle open whilst driving home pooped it big time, Anyway really simple to do just a bit awkward as there is not alot of space but only took me 15 mins to change and it's made such a difference to the pedal feel now it's really smooth and not stiff or notchy like it used to be really glad I changed it now. :approve:

changed mine at the weekend and its still not really smooth.. ive tried making the bends as smooth as possible.. don't suppose someone who's pedal is smooth can post a photo of the cable in situ near the throttle body please.. thanks

There's a clip on the header tank for the coolant that the cable sits in mate. You can use that to position the cable. You'll see what I mean when you look.

It's not complicated, basically, you unhook it from the throttle body (very easy) then remove the drivers side wheel, take out some fir tree clips and peel back the arch liner.

From there you can see where the cable goes into the car. There will be a couple of click clips holding the cable in place, undo these with a screw driver. Once you've done this, unclip the cable at the pedal end (again, very easy) and pull the cable through.

Now, get a friend to feed the cable through from the top of the engine, near the throttle body, through the same route it was done before, ensure the cable has no sharp bends in it., You can (sitting in the wheel arch) get it back into the clips, and feed it into the cabin. Connect everything up, done.
