FAO people running Circa 190-200bhp.

Ino what u mean huthie, the flamer comes alive at 4k strongly! Not sure if that's helped by the exhaust system on it but I agree my current 182 is abit poor under the 5k belt.. But don't want to waste money mapping it, not to map it again if I do decide to get some cams or maby this JMS inlet some time later.. :S

Since we've had ours catcam'd, decatted and mapped it's noticably faster and it was hardly a slouch before. A mapped 225 couldn't get away from me in a straight line :)

give over, my mates stage 2'd 225 ran a 14.1 in the dampat tork and will piss 13's in the dry, his standard 225 ran a 14.5
trouble is there are a lot of people driving 225's who can't drive them very well

suprised at that, my missus's 225 is standard and as piers said we did 5 rolling road starts starting in a couple of different gears and different speeds, he even had the start on me every time as i let him say "when" and was about a car length ahead at least every time over a space of about 30 mph. Thats standard for standard tho.

If you're doing it to beat other cars then you're never going to be happy. There will always be something quicker. TBH nearly all cars like this are the same speed when driven sensibly. This car rinsed that one, or that car smoked this one...all bulls**t pub talk. Cross country is where the fun is, and you don't want to be racing around corners into a motorcyclist just to swell some egos. The only winner will be the guy with the biggest balls, if he doesn't crash and burn first.

Pointless spending hundreds or thousands of pounds for a few extra bhp if the aim is to race other cars (and still get beat by some tool in a remapped xyz). If it's for a track car then it's understandable. IMO just be happy with it, and get a faster car when you do change.

Predictable response from me I suppose, but meh. Take it for it is - an opinion.

Hmmmm Matt Wills Trophy went backwards when we did a similar thing..............!!

I do agree with u RM.. I do. I suppose the love for my car exceeds sense at times. As I would hate to sell it later down the line and get a quicker hatch to be disapointed, hence why I keep playing with idea of tuning my 182 then I'd wouldhopefully be a win win situation.. :S

The money I would spend on the 182 to make it as quick as the bigger hatches I could just go and buy a FRS (mk1) or an 225 F1 which are the only other cars I'd be happy with.. Maby? (within my budget n for value for money)

My point is that those cars aren't even quicker, really. Most of these hot hatches are very similar. A MkII FRS wouldn't even get away from a 182 below 70mph, let alone a MkI FRS or Meg 225 leaving you behind, so what do you gain? Not a lot. Racing is a mugs game anyway but we won't go down that road again (pun intended).

I see where you're coming from but I promise you'll be bored again in 3 months and wish you'd spent the money on upgrading to a totally different car.

  172 - 249bhp @ the wheels
Cams circa are what, £1500 for new ones fitted and mapped? 10bhp for £1500, or 100+bhp for £3-4k if you charge it. One you will pretend to notice, the other you will actually notice.

I've always considered the best mods to be decent breathing (decat and an induction setup) some weight loss, better seats, a better steering wheel, coilovers and tyres.

To open up the engine and start shovelling in thousands for not alot of gain is not really my idea of fun.
Keep it simple and well maintained and it'll keep you grinning for ages.

people giving opinions when they've never been in the situation... love it.

do you know what stg the meg was running? no

do you know the exact spec on richngems? no

a meg even stg 1 is a heavy old beast and a well set up, angry, light clio is NO slouch, I know as i have had a normal, stg 1, stg 2 meg and been in the aforementioned clio...

only then can you comment on the authentication of comments. sorry to divulge but if you weren't there its hard to comment ain't it.

its a case of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other... the meg had ALOT of weight in, but alot more power, and we both know rich the driver was s**t ;)

So what are u saying naith, yay or nay towards the situation? or Just 6 n 2 3's?

So you can't have an opinion about modifying a car unless you've already done it? Or am I reading that wrong?

For the record I considered power upgrades to my 182 many times, but my opinion, as posted in this thread, saw to it never happening. An opinion is just an opinion. It'd doesn't have to be taken too SRS.

simple answer save cash and buy..... House! I have just come to light this week that the house I have bought has just made a few ££££'s and I haven't even fully moved in yet! and a mate has just made over £100k on his house!

maybe just me being old  but really I would love the trophy to be able to keep up with the bigger powered cars spend £££££'s on the engine etc - when I owned the LCR I spent £2.5k in 8 months.... new exhaust, remap etc etc.... yes it went quick (270ish bhp) but I was sick of it after 8 months

Like you I get itchy feet after a while (everyone does!) and would like a change - either you see one you like, a mate gets a new car, someone you know etc... just think your lucky to have a LY 182 - other people would love to own one!

As Mr Roy Munson said if you spend a few grand on the engine you will only wish you spent that money later on upgrading to a 'better' car!

It sounds to me you would like a really fast/powerful car... imo you shouldn't have sold the 172 for the 182.....

its not £1500 for 10bhp though, its not all about peak power. Sure we only got 10bhp peak on ours but the power delivery between 4.5-6k is amazing. :)

Personally (as much as i appreciate modded cars/nice exhaust notes) i wouldnt be modifying my car just to keep up with the oposition.

Ive had plenty of hot-hatches and as the old and wise of me keeps saying, if you want a fast car, buy a fast car...

diff engine i know, and apparently a worse one cos its older.......but std vs cammed in ur williams you could tell the diff no questions.

as you say tho, weighing up the 2....no comparison.

  53 Clio's & counting
pathetic excuse, there 150bhp not 190-200. lol

Bear in mind the MK2 is a genuine 70-100 kg's heavier, all ph2 have bigger wheels, and all have longer gearing than a willy, which makes a huge difference.

My old Hybrid ran 14.0 @ 101mph with completely standard internals, but it was stripped so lighter and had a 16v box, which i felt was the best gearing match, my ph1 hits 67ish in 2nd, compared to 63 ish in the hybrid, means i was way into 4th in the Hybrid fully in its optimum power range, where as my ph1 is still in 3rd.

and a renault 5 is what?

about 40 kgs with full trim ;)

still..... a well tuned 5 with apparently a race driver at the wheel, is still no match for a cammed williams....2 up too . ;)

We haven't modded the 182 to "keep up" with stuff we wanted it to go faster. All in it's cost us about £800 as I got the cams cheap and them fitted at the same time as we had the belts changed so it was only about £50 on top of that, then just the remap, oh and a decat ;)

if u love your Clio and want to make it even more exciting then get new cams in it

What gains are realistically expected of camshafts and a remap? (if any?)

We gained 10bhp peak and a load more torque, it's nit necessarily about how much peak power u get but how it changes the delivery. It's fierce at 5k now, the tc doesn't know what to do with itself lol here our before and after

i had a play with a 225 last week from a standing start in my stripped clio with 172bhp and i was on my own and he was 2 up and up to mid 4th gear he could not pass me :)
it deffo was standard as he would of whopped me if it had been mapped.
