Fiat 20V Turbo

20V turbos are very fast for the cash in a straight line, I would have thought they would beat a 172 BUT.... on average roads with bends etc the 172 would keep up at the worst and I would think a well driven 172 would beat a 20 V turbo. The are nice cars though. As far as I can remember the cambelt gets done at 40,000 miles ish and is a big expensive (maybe engine out job) so look carefully!

Have you considered a Alfa GTV V6, much nicer and classier in my opinion and it has one of the best engines or any car ever. Also I guess your budget must be about 5 - 8 K how about a Porker 944? Little bit dated but if you get a good one itll go as well as a 20V and look after it and there will be no depreciation!

ive raced one from the lights in the slight damp. We were both spinning at first, and pretty even once traction, if anything he was edging a tiny bit. I went for 4th gear and slammed it into 2nd by mistake! arrrrg! over 8000 rpm thought it was going to blow up, but its fine! done that twice now....

Thanks Twit, yeah the Alfa could be on the cards. 220 bhp, NA to :devilish:

Prob keep up, well depends on the driver eta, but its those times when your on a straight road and just want to be pushed in the back of the seat mmmmmm!

Porker could be a very expensive motor if things go wrong (well what car aint lol) And they are soooooo nice. But insurace could be a little nasty

Ever being in the GTV?

Good man! Far better than the Fiat!

If i could i would grab you by the shoulders and shake you " THE ALFA IS BETTER!"

The engine is superb, very reliable, sounds gorgeous!! Autodelta can even do a turbo, bore it to 3.2 V6 and give you four exhaust pipes and i guarantee it sounds better than any road ferrari with them on. Also theyre still making them so you have a wide choice to suit your price. Theyre also bringing out a facelift with 240bhp, a detuned GTA version basically.

only saying what happened dude. I agree they are quicker but you konw driver skill nall ( i am schumacher by the way!) It was wet, so maybe his added power get spinning all the way through the gears and he couldnt get as much grip as i did!?

Ive made my mind up too lol. You can get them bored to 3.5l, camshaft kits etc 300bhp easy! All pretty cheap also

Thats Jarnos car, boss of autodelta, my dad had one in red (of course!) with chassis/brakes/exhaust upgrade. It was very quick and agile, had a race with a sapphire cossie and beat it easily.

I dont deny you know your stuff Rob and I too love Alfas, got a 2.0 Spider at home, but no matter how good the V6 sounds with the Autodelta pipes I think your claim that it sounds better than any road going Ferrari is a little ambitious.

I had a 98 20VT LE before I rolled it. Definitely faster in a straight line. 0 - 100 in 14.5 secs. People on http://www.coupe-sport.co.ukwww.coupe-sport.co.uk have posted 13.5 sec 1/4 mile times. Makes 220bhp as standard, but fit it with supersprint CAT back exhaust and sealed induction, it will push 237bhp as RRd by someone on the above website, so easiliy tunable. Infact some one on that site has a 340bhp one for sale.

Handling is pretty good, though it has Viscous coupling diff, Clio is definitely better on twistier roads. Build quality is slightly better than the MKII 172 and fuel economy is around 29 -34mpg which isnt bad considering the performance.

Cam belt changes are carried out at 72000 miles and is an engine out job. However, Fiat coupe specialist L & M International can do it with the engine in place.

Kept up with the likes of Imprezza STIs and beat Boxster S and Alfa 3.0 V6 and thashed calibre turbos, rover 220 turbo and all BMWs bar M series.

Well think about it available models are the 360, 456, and 550, you cant even hear the last two and the 360 is like a loud M3, the GTV with those pipes give a V8 noise from low revs to an F1 like howl at high revs, me and my dad both still rank it above his vanquish which is hailed as the best sounding car available at the moment.

340bhp through front wheels hehe tyres every 10 miles among other probs hehe. Dont forget RPMs 172 does a ton in 14ish:D

Cant even hear the last two? You ever heard a 456 flat 12? Sounds awesome and as for a 360 sounding like a loud M3 Id be a bit fairer on the Ferrari and say the M3 sounds like a quiet 360! All down to personal opinion though and to be fair I havent heard the Autodelta pipes. Vanquish does sound good though, know I guy who was selling a couple the other week, reg on one was 8UL, definitely a Ferrari man myself though but Im biased!

My uncle bought a crashed 456 and brought it up to road worthyness (£50k all in) and it sounded very restricted...to me anyway.

Well i love italian cars but love astons over ferraris as my dad has owned a few astons so im obviously biased! Not a fan of any Ferraris on sale at the mo also, 360 is nothing on the 355, 456 is a rip off, 550 look like a toyota from the front. My opinion anyway :)

Never driven a 355 so I cant compare it to the 360 modena and spiders that I have driven but I would beg to differ looking at the spec and the amount of development that went into the 360 (windtunnel especially). The 456 I heard sounded awseome and as for the 550 looking like a toyota again its the other way round!

Im the perfect man to ask for this! Me and my mate have spent 5 months looking for the right one for him and he eventually picked his 20V Turbo up on Saturday..... it is quick! 75mph in second and 0-100 quicker than an Aston Martin. Book time qtes 6 secs flat to 60 but getting the power down is well hard due to wheelspin, well be going for it off the lights this weekend so ill post how i get on.... nice cars though, good leather interior, sounds mint and will do 155mph. Cambelt is £1000, brakes are £1000 and its Grp20 insurance. bugger:mad:

I had a 20V normally aspirated Coupe a few years back (150 bhp). Not the power of the Turbo but all I can say about the car is it handled like a barge. Not a patch on the 106 Rallye I had before it, (they share the same chasis as the Fiat Tipo). I kept it 6 months then was glad to see the back of it. If you think French cars rattle you want to try a FIAT. When I returned to my car on a hot day the rattles and squeaks from the dashboard used to drown out the ICE. Big problem with fuel injectors on the 20V engine and the exhaust manifold is a big problem on the Turbo cars apparently, £800 for a 6 year / 80,000 mile service is a joke. Bits of trim used to fall off regularly too, completely spoiled the enjoyment of owning what at the time was a sexy car. They look well dated now IMHO and the Turbos are now falling into the hands of the Max Power brigade. Lots off shagged examples out there.

As you can tell Im not a fan.

Rallye-King, should have got a 20v turbo! I had abosolutely no probs with mine and really miss that surge of power when the turbo kicks in. I agree that the handling isnt as good as the Clio, thats why stuck to mainly A roads. It was twisty country roads when I came a cropper as a deer decided to cross the road.

I own a 20V Turbo, and yes the Clio 172 will do it on a bendy set of roads but straight line it wont get close after 40-50 mph

Got a bigger responce than I thought.

Still cant decide, the Alfa is better looking IMO, but the Fiat has the Turbo rush? what to do?

It would seem the Alfa is cheaper to run as well?

I just want something quicker than the 172, must handle well and be reliable. Oh and cost no more to run, well not much more anyway?

The GTV has very advanced front suspension, they worked really hard so the Alfa could cope with all 220bhp and it resulted in a better car. The Fiat maybe quicker as standard but the alfa is hardly slow, 0-60 in 6.5 and 150mph top speed. Everybody likes the look of the alfa wheras the Fiats looks are..umm..controversial! The alfa is reliable and beautifully appointed, many car manufacturers have stolen the air con vent idea if you have a look at one! The insurance group is 19, on the high side but remember its a mini ferrari! Evo has given it 5 out of 5!

hmm, my friend owned one of these. We did loads of testing and due to him not being able to get the power down in first(or second!) it was fairly even to around 50, there on he was accelerating away by a lot. From a standing start i stayed with him up to 60 many a times due to my superior driving skills:D, if we were rolling and raced he would kick my ass all over the show!

i have sat in cars that handle worse, the power is incredible and it pulls to 120 with absoloutely no problems.

I test drove an Alfa GTV and I feel it had an awful driving position. You either really stretch for the wheel or move the seat forward but have your legs around the steering wheel. The room in the back is a joke and more like a second boot, the proper boot is tiny thanks to the stubby rear end and rear multi-link suspension. Seats where unsupportive compared with the Recaros in the 20VT LE. Yes it was fast, but the Fiat was faster and handled just as well. The thrust from the 5 cylinder turbo is enough to make your eyes roll back in to its sockets. Not much will keep up with one on an A road unless its expensive exotica or mad turbo nutter Jap motors. Engine sound fantastic, probably not as aural as the GTV V6, but has a nice deep rummble on idle and throbbing at high revs. I have been thinking about going back to one again but can;t find a good one I like the look of.

Its only ever italian if the driving position is ape like. I fit in the back of a GTV ok when the passenger seat is moved forward a bit, and im 5 foot 11. The way the seats are sculpted decieves the amount of space there actually is. Besides, the interior is a thing of beauty, the Fiats isnt.

Surely everyone knows that Fiat/Alfa/Lancia are all one company, so any qwerks with 1 car are passed through the range of cars!Until they update models etc.Yes some of the Alfas do look nice but the Fiat Coupe was styled by Pininfarina (the ferrari bloke!) and any day of the week the Fiat will blitz any Alfa

Pinninfarina only styled the interior of the car. The exterior was actually designed by an American geezer. Unlike the 406 Coupe which was a Pinifarina design externally ( hence the Pinninfarina badge on the exterior of the 406 a la certain Ferraris). The 406 Coupe is also produced in Pinninfarinas factory in Italy.

Pininfarina has his name on the side of a HYUNDAI!!!!............and i believe its the HUYNDAI GETZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf.............utterly dissapointing

The Alfa and the Fiat were both styled by pinin. They also designed the soft top for the Bentley azure and the older MGF

Hello JonC, Remember me, :)Not been in here for ages since I cancelled my order on the Clio Cup, just been considering a Clio V6 or VX220 so doing some research, quite funny to see a Coupe 20v Turbo topic my first look in. The Alfa and Puegeot were styled by pinin hence the full pininfarina head on the side of the motor, the Coupes interior was done by pinin but the exterior was by Chris Bangle the guy who now works for BMW and done some of there more hideous motors, Z4 etc. The Coupe was a beauty though, his best work Ive seen, and regret selling mine, I think most people who consider a Coupe also consider the GTV, hard not to they were often found next to each other in the same show room went you went to the dealer, more or less the same money to, both were/ are still superb cars, the Fiats build quality, handling, practicality for a sports Coupe and the immense grunt are what got my vote, I had the LE, top motor tuned to just under 300bhp and cant say wheelspin or torquesteer ever reared there ugly head (expect in the wet of course, where the main order of the day is to not be a dick and then youll be alright, same gooes for 172 to though) and the Coupe never understeered as much as the V6 GTV did, thats a heavy block up front. In comparison with the 172, the 172 was more of a laugh round the twisties I have to admit but cant match the refinement of either of these two Italians, different class (to be expected really when you consider list prices)

Which ever you decided on you wont be disappointed with either Really.

A small note on the handling of the Coupe, well driven they are very good in the corners, its all about balance and getting the right entry speed and keeping revs at a suitable level so as not to hit overboost whislt in the corner trying to power on for exit, couple of lessons the track youll have it sorted, its a well capable machine.
