there is a plastic filler plug on the front of the gearbox about halfway up. you fill it until it overflows out of this filler plug hole. you need the car level at the time and it holds approx 3 litres.

Yea ill vouch its a peice of p*ss, but u need a bit of tube that will fit in the plug and allow you to pour to the oil into it.

even better if u have a bit of tub which is slighty larger in width, cut about 2 inchs up one end, and push it together so it makes a funnel shape, stick that in the hole, then pour your oil down the tube.

youll see what i mean once u remove the plug, theres no other way of getting it in there, unless u have a pump.

Nah.

Hop down to halfords. Their orange funnels with flexi tube on are a perfect fit and allows you to fill the box up in about 1 min.

Easy job.

Yea, its not a bad idea.

You dont need pics mate.

Just take the airbox off, on the front of the box youll see a white (probably covered in crud) plastic wingnut. Take that off, and fill the box up from there. Like jay said its full when oil flows out of the hole.

To empty. UNder the car there is a plastic sheild over the gear selector rod. That clips off. UNdo the drain plug with the same 8mm square bit, and drain as per normal.

trust me i will need pics! lol

jus thought was a good idea as 100k is quite a lot and thought it might make my gears smoother and last longer

probley best to chuck some slick 50 gearbox tratment in there as well as it might do a bit of good! i think that i will get one of those funnels from halfords for the next time i do mine!

im always looking for ways of improving my valver. Are there any signs to show that the gear box oil needs changing would this be checked in a full service or mot?

Not really.

If you need pics, get a buddy to help you.......its only 1 bolt, 1 finger bolt and pour oil in.

And i wouldnt touch any slick50 product.

BenR whats up with slick50?

Me dad has used it on all his cars, and on mine, never had problems. Always thought it was worth the extra ££

Slick50........the age old arguement.

Its a PTFE solid dispersant, meaning particles of PTFE are circulated via the oil system to areas of MOFT metal to metal contact. Somewhere its meant to be an EPA and a friction modifier.

Now, PTFE is GREAT when used as an alloyed film on bronze-lead sintered-PTFE bearings, or with copper and Titainium. BUT its practically useless and detrimental to engine life (debatable some might say) as a solid dispersant running around your oil system. Itll accelerate particulate formation as it burns and creates deposits which can clog oilways, bearings, cause ring sticking, bearing failure, oil filter blockage etc etc.

All oils have their own EPAs which are normally organic zinc, moly and pottasium and adheire to metal surfaces through heat preassure and in some cases electro-field formation. They form a monomolecular layer which is there temporarily and prevents true metal to metal contact in times of little or no oil film or film shear.

The power steering stuff is ok, as there are no extreem pressure conditions......but not in my engine or gearbox thanks!
