Finally got a Clio. I've been missing out!



  BMW 130i
After years of wasting money on the Clio 1.2 16v and then rolling her over last December, and an interesting Astra Mk4 2.0 Sri in between, Iv finally become a man and bought a Clio 172 Cup in Mondial blue, 53 plate, 66k miles. I think I got a bargin, she's idling rough and the seller had tried to rectify it with a new coil pack and leads (receipt from last week), needless to say it didn't work. Picked her up for £1990, time to show her some love...
The seller did say belived she had been tuned to some extent because he had sold a few 182's and 172's and this was completely different to drive, more responsive etc, so need to look into this, possible remap id assume.

She needs a bit of work, having no service history and/or Renault stamps etc.

So the plans:

Full service (air, oil, plugs, pollen)
Cambelt change, dephasher change, new aux belt and tensioner
Possible clutch change
Make the k-tec SS stealth exhaust fit from the old 1.2 16v
New engine mounts, including powerflex dogbone
Car didn't come with a front splitter so ordering a Leon Cupra R one tomorrow
Hope I can shine some light on why she's idling so roughly
Tracking, she's massively out, wheels a good 20degrees of straight
Fit a short shift link (because its the best mod I ever did to the 1.2)
Check all the brakes, callipers have some odd rust marks, considering painting them a blue to match car
Other small cosmetic bits (Polish front headlights, new headlight washer blank (one missing), replacement aerial base (broken) )


What can I say, well iv really been missing out.....

you've been done there mate, paid FAR too much with no history. 1300 tops with no belt change history.

Car - 1990
Full service (air, oil, plugs, pollen) - 50

1990 for a car without the belts done :/ you shouldve asked for £600 off just for that :(

Your right, that is a lot for a 172... But judging by the picture at the bottom of the OP its a 182... Unless he just googled it! :rasp:

You mean the ph2 172 cup with cup badges, cup spoiler and turinis ?!

Yeah, that's a 182 alright.

Should have noted I do all the work myself, therefore the above prices are a little lout. I do agree looking back now I should have got a few hundred off with no service history.
The prices I'm doing it for, parts already ordered:

Sevice - £50
cambelt etc - 180 + 110 + 50 = £340
clutch - £110
Engine mounts - only ordered the dog one but that was £35, Im considering making the upper engine mount actually.
splitter - I had read they were £12, correct me if I'm wrong though, if not seen them on eBay for £44

Im looking at spending, £550ish.

I probably should have mentioned that the seller took £500 part exchange for the old Astra, which was cosmetically a mess! Im pretty sure I shouldn't have got more than £200 considering its cosmetic state.

Yeah it definitely is the 172 cup, and that's the picture I took straight after I bought it.

Good work.

The Renault splitters are something stupid over £100 but Skoda Fabia splitter does the job for £12 !

Without wishing to teach you to suck eggs, I hope you've got all the locking tools for the timing belts ;)

Yeah Iv read the guide online, and realised its no straight forward task. Iv found the camshaft locking tool and tdc pin (Sealey:( ) for £44. Trying to give Renault a call now for their prices.

I popped into the Seat dealer, yeah...... £44.75 for the Cupra R splitter, any ideas why the price has sky rocketed?

Iv seen an replica Renault one going for £22 on eBay, it might have to do, well unless I can get Seat to drop the price to similar.

Because it's a Fabia splitter, not a Cupra, as posted above?

Yeah I've got one fitted, replaces a few bits on and around the gear lever to reduce play/sloppyness so it feels more stiff and positive. if you do a search on here there should be a few threads about it

I'm sure I only paid about £15 for one a couple of years ago. Ironically I never fitted it and its in the garage in its original packaging. That's going straight on eBay soon.

Renault want £67 + £7.13 for the tools.

I'm considering buying the Laser ones and strengthening the plate, only because the thread I read did say that the Laser ones bent when changing the dephaser pulley.

Iv messaged Yanno, see what he says about these kits.

Ordered the third tool now, £50 for the second camshaft locking tool. Still need to call up Renault about the special socket for undoing the dephaser bolt though.

The Fabia ones are fine, they're nice and flexible too. I have a Renault one that fell off in the shed but I'm more than happy leaving my Skoda one on.

The fabia splitters look better than the seat ones imo.

And wouldn't it be cheaper just to get a garage to change the belts by the time you have bought all the tools :S

Davis splitters on phase 2 and 182's but the cupra R one looks much much better on the phase 1 it suits the bumper more, I only paid £19 for my cupra splitter 2 years ago the jump in price is a joke

Fabia ones are nice, although make sure you fit the screws back in, as its cost me alot of dollars to put right. in the region of £200 in fact.

Yeah the fabia vrs is certainly the one I'm going to go for now, shall order tomorrow.

Well £609 was only cambelt change, add in the aux kit and dephaser and god of knows how much Renalt would want, obviously I could have gone to a specialist external of Renault, but there seems to be a lot of people unhappy after this has been done.
The cost has been mounting up (£280 parts £100 tools) , the idea is however to sell the tools after iv used them, obviously I'll make a loss but only a few quid hopefully. I'm more than happy to do the work myself, not a fan of paying someone else.

Shall be doing it all next weekend. Start Friday night and finish Saturday, not one for rushing, especially on this job.

Birchdown do the dephaser and belts change for £450. No aircon remember so cheaper. Did mine.

As for running rough, search for '106 Gti map sensor' in youtube, is it running like that? If so change the MAP sensor (£17.50 from Renparts) - this just happened to mine!

Didn't realise there was anyone that local doing it that cheap, and properly. Oh well you learn from your mistakes!

I can't seem to find a good video, got a link? It's idling fairly rough, taco moving a bit, so I'd say that's more than normal personally. Iv got all new plugs and full service to do as well, hoping that might be the issue. Shall do service tomorrow.

FLOL.

You self-tap the splitter into the bottom of the bumper and cut the ends off. There's no screws to put back in.

It's a 10 minute job for a blind monkey......
 
Put what screws back in? You dont have to take any out in the first place..

You simply get:

8-10x Self-tapping screws
1x Splitter

Screw the splitter into the bumper, cut the ends off, admire the saving of over £100.

the screws that are holding in the arch liner from the bottom of the bumper. They stick out so if they arent taken out the splitter wont fit up against the underside of the bumper which is why I takes them out.

Got some bits done to her today:
- replacement aerial base and aerial - other one was destroyed, held on with a jubile clip from underneath
- changed the cone air filter to an enclosed carbon fibre one, ducted down to the front bottom grill.
- carbon wrapped some interior trim parts which were scratched
- replaced the bottom centre steering wheel trim piece - was missing when bought
- replaced front window wipers with aero style ones
- adjusted washer jets - was spraying everywhere but the window

Need to source a replacement wheel and thumb grips, so expensive though, for the same price I could get an OMP boss and wheel.
Need to order the splitter Monday. Also found the centre exhaust mount is broke and has been replaced with a big plastic cable tie, so iv just ordered one and I'll do the trick with a few stainless cable ties to support the mount when it arrives (worked a treat on the old 1.2).
