Fitted my first air feed, how do you get the second to the bumper?

With my old man having brought me 7' of 70mm bore ducting home for my air box last night, I got stuck in tonight.
After muchos messing, re-routing bits of loom, re-jigging the horn and the removal of the acoustic valve/20mph valve, I was left with this:

I was quite suprised at how well the ducting slipped over the original airbox inlet after the removal of the original hose.


Finally, a shot of the entrance to the feed, facing out through the vent in the base of the near side wheel arch liner. I just hope it doesn't scoop up too much crap/water.

It definately seems to have made the throttle response crisper and added a bit of a bark.
I have a question though. How do you get a feed to the front bumper grille on a mk2 172 as the radiator appears to block its passage.

Mate, I had the same problem when I had a viper on my 172......the answer is I gave up and brought a ITG panel.
I couldn't get the feed around the aircon or rad without it being crushed, hence why I gave up. Some people take out the fog light and use that as a feed, thats easier as it goes down behind the headlight. Hillpower do a scoop which sits just infront of the wheel, which sticks out under the car. I believe the routing of the hose for this is the same as the fog light solution, but without the need to remove the light.

I think the Hillpower feed will have a similar effect to my feed as it is angled forwards and feeds from under the car.
It must be possible to get a feed to the bumper, look at Eves beast:

I just wouldn't want to cut into the bumper, I would leave mine sat behind the grille for a subtle look.
It looks like part of the radiator must have been removed to fit that. I can't imagine where it would go.

Thats the effect ^^^^^ I wanted, but like I said the hose was getting crushed hence restricting cold flow. There is a plastic divider type thing next to the rad (clips into the sump guard) which can be removed, saying that there is still the rad and aircon in the way.

I have seen a brake duct used behind the grille then the hose coming off that at an angle. I think D/tweeks sells them.

Having thought about it, I don't think the position of the standard feed behind the light is that bad, it just needs an extra something to guide the air into the inlet.
Might have to have a look on Tweeks.

No mate, I never manged it. I went for a ITG Panel in the end, after trying open induction and closed, like the viper. To be honest (and I dont mean to put you off) out of the three filter types I tried, the ITG was the best in terms of how the car responded. I felt it gave it alot more urgency through the rev range. When I put my std air box back on with the ITG in, the car felt loads more responsive.

I've still got the standard box with a PiperX panel so I guess I'm not too far away from your setup. I couldn't justify the outlay for a Viper etc. as they need a good feed for any real gains and I don't think they will provide much more than a well modded box.
I definately think the removal of the acoustic valve has improved things though, there is a nice bark to it from the front now and much sharper response with less bogging down.

I think your current position in the wheel arch is fine - very similar location to the Hillpower scoop on mine. In fact, it's probably less prone to crap getting in. As stated elsewhere, I wouldn't worry about a "ram effect", just being in a cold airflow should be enough.

So my current setup will be fine without the need for the second feed being altered?
I think I may try and fit a scoop behind the grille to redirect a little more air in to the feed.

mate i paid a mechanic to fit it for me... he said it took about 3 hours lol.... an absoulte nightmare in his own words haha..... does look the dogs though

Cheers buddy, would be much appreciated if I could get an idea as to where the feed runs from the filter and how it works its way around the radiator etc.

Yeh changing/routing anything under the bonnet is a major ballache in a 172, just not enough room to move anything.
