fitting engine

  RenaultSport clio
does anyone know if there were any differences between early and late 1.4 energy engines? I'm probably going to change mine for a newer one as mine's a '92/K engine.

Have an idea the later ones had no distributor cap? Anyone know if the ECU will play ball if I switch it to a newer 1.4 (eg a 1997 or '98 model)?

Need all the help I can get at the moment!

Hi mate,

Ive got a 1997 1.4 RT and before that I had a 1994 RT and I can safely say the earlier ones are the quicker engines. After 96 reno put the BHP from 80 down to 75. The only thing you would gain out of changing the engine is a lower mileage unit. TBH there isnt much point. If your going to rip the whole engine out, you might as well drop a valver lump in.

Hope this helps mate.

yeah only reason I'm changing it is because the valves are bent! At 126k miles on the engine, it seems a little pointless replacing the head/ valves etc. Think I'm fitting a different gearbox too while its out as mine's like stirring porridge!

Hoping I can get a '95 or '96 unit now!

Sorry Dan but you are wrong.

If i was you i would get a late E7J engine rather than an older one because ren improved the management and moved the lamda into the exhaust manifold which means they generally run better especially from cold. You will also obviously have newer big/main bearings and seals, less worn cams etc etc. Not to mention vacuum system was improved. You get a inlet pre-heater on later models too.

Yes the power did go down slightly but if you look at the stats, the 0-60 is quicker becuase the later models used JC1053 gearboxes which are shorter and actually make the car quicker dispite the 5hp loss. The 5hp loss is due to renault making the inlet ports swirl the gas in an attempt to increase economy.

If you want a rough running engine get an old one if you want a nice smooth idle and less post installation problems get a E7J from around 1996/97. Also, try and find a JC1053 box.

The best combo imo is a new bottom end using a early 'straight port' head so you get rid of that crap inlet design. This is what i use, or will use in the next few weeks. While your at it, get some head work done, get a laguna spi throttle body, port match the inlet and bore it to match the tb, get a decat and straight through system and you will be staring 90+bhp in the face.

Emm no, the early engines are better as the heads have straight ports so flow better.

1.8 TB is larger but can be made to fit...its a common swap. To really make the best of it you need headwork though as you won't get much on its own.

Yes the ports are straight but that is the only advantage. He can and most likely will use an old head on it.
