the destop in my garage which runs my cnc died last night, motherbaord issues.

so i just went and picked a second hand desktop up but am having a few issues swapping my hard drive over.

here are the three cables which are in the slot where the hard drive goes, you can see just below my hand where ive put the old hard drive in

hes removed the big ribbon cable from the hard drive to the motherboard but its ok i have one of these off the dead desktop, but im strugging with power to the hard drive
im assuming this is the connection on the motherboard where the hard drive plugs into

gone into the setting son start up and seleted boot from cd so i can reinstall windows, but it wont actually boot from the cd. although the CD drive is spinning round etc its a lightscribe deck.
the pc came with two drives a lightscribe one and DVD rom one. ive had to remove the dvd rom one so i can plug the hard drive in.

anyone offer any advice on how i can get things going?

Bit of an awkward one to do via a forum! It's not a difficult thing to want to do, but there are hundreds of silly little ways you can get stuck.

Firstly, and I apologise for this, make sure you're putting a DVD/CD in a DVD drive and not a CD into a DVD drive. It's easy to forget that CD drives were only completely phased out 6 or so years ago. Of course the drive could simply be f***** for all you know if you bought it on ebay? Try swapping the Lightscribe for the DVD-ROM drive.

Secondly go into the BIOS and find out what the computer can actually see is connected. It should be something like "Channel 1/Primary Master - your HDD" and "channel 1/primary slave - your DVD." Well worth having a play around, try connecting the HDD as the master (the end of the IDE cable) and the DVD as the slave (the middle of the IDE cable) and vica versa. Also have a good look around for ultra obvious options such as "enable IDE HDD" or "cable select" (which should be set to "no" if it exists)

EDIT: To get into the BIOS, hammer (usually) F10 on startup. There will be some sort of hint ("Press F10 for setup") etc, though I'm sure you've noticed this if you've got into the boot menu...
