Fixing a camcorder for in-car filming

Ive seen a few of you with suction pads to hold camcorders inside the windscreen. Where can you get these from and how much? Ive only found a place called Hague that sells them, which are quite expensive.

Also any other ideas for getting in-car shots of my next trackday, without resorting to jumpy footage?

Would one of those stands that are used for in car monitors not be a better job as the screw sizes for them are generally standard in size meaning you could fix it to the dash and tilt/lower/pan etc with them?

The ones with suction pads are pretty expensive. Jessops will sell you a camera clamp which is like a G-clamp with a tripod mount. Ive found the best place to mount it is the passenger headrest upright. Works well and you can easily access the camera from the drivers seat. I think mine cost about £12.

Well as you may have seen I use a 99p dent puller and a camera G cramp that cost me about £5 from an old camera shop. It does the job very well although I don’t think that I will be putting it outside the car. One thing to remember is to switch the auto focus off and set the camcorder to infinity that way if you get anything on the windscreen it does not try to focus on that.

I always fit mine to the rear middle head rest with a belt and a bit of plastic to stop it jumping, gives you a better aspect of the track and driver

Is it lightweight because it has less letters to carry about on the number plate?

ive just always used a shed load of duck tape and a sponge inbetweent eh cam and head reast.....steady shot, to vibration and cheap as chips. But not gold chips.

haha, yeah those few letters plus my ally bonnet shave about 3 seconds off to 60!

On the mk1, the dashboard instrument shroud is a good place to mount the camera. Its flat so you can just tape the camera down with a load of duck tape, it is also angled slightly downwards so when you watch the video back you can see the road in front rather than a load of sky.
