Ok, what am I looking at in a flash? Whats the important bits to look out for and whats the difference going to be between the cheaper end and the slightly more expensive?

Would basically just be used for indoor low light situations and things as I think the built in flashon the 400D is pretty pap.

Iv'e got a 430 EX, tis teh shizznit

The cheap one has feck all extra functions, I can turn the flash intensity to whatever I need on the canon, plus it will fire in a dark environment pre shot to get a focus

Definitely go for the 430ex over the Metz. The 430 head can swivel in all directions which makes bouncing the flash a lot easier, where as the Metz can only go up and down.

The 430EXII is just out so the original should be able to be had for a reasonable price these days.

Yup what everyone else said, I managed to pick the the first version 430Ex for 155 delivered a few years ago.

430 is a decent flash gun, if you want to save a bit of cash get a nissin flash Di622. Bought one for my dad and it works really well
