footwell lights - courtesy light

courtesy light has 3 wires going to it.
red
white
black.

i connected my foot-well lights + to the red and the - to the white....
now only the foot-well lights come on when the car is unlocked.

How do i wire it so the foot-well and courtesy lights all come on?

i tried a few combinations and just cant get it to do it, ideas?
(i don't want the foot-well lights on perm, only to come on with courtesy light....)
i did wonder if its a power issue, but that cant be right surely.

The black wire on the LEDS can just go to the bodywork of the car anything metal as its just a negative and the batteries negative is bolted to the chassis as for the power I think the white is the switched live (becomes live when the door is open) so the positive of the LEDS need to go to that.
