Free/Cheap Basic Design Software

Hi,

I'm in the need of some Software for Basic/Simple Designs, I'm thinking simple image work and label designing,

Anyone recommend anything that is free or fairly cheap and relatively easy to use as I've never done anything like this before,

try using open office, then use its draw application

Think I had Gimp before actually just couldn't remember what it was called... Cheers Dan.

Just downloaded Gimp so hopefully with some practice I'll be able to create some decent images.
